Waxing/Depilating

Contributor: LikeSunshineDust LikeSunshineDust
So I've been think of trying to use a different method of pubic hair removal than shaving. I've narrowed it down to two: waxing and depilating. I've tried both before. My waxing experience was at a salon and I got most of a Brazilian done. It was nice to have someone else do it, but I can't see myself being able to afford regular salon visits. If I were to go with waxing, I would do it at home. My depilating experience has been so-so. The smell bothered me (used Nair), but was a few years ago, so I'm not sure if anything new and non-smelly is on the market.

I know there are other threads on hair removal, but does anyone have advice specific to these two methods? Any favorite products you'd like to recommend?

Hi Sunshine,

I've been wondering the same thing. I shave but you just can't get totally smooth. A friend just ordered a personal shaver. Can't wait to hear from her to see if its worth getting. I'll let you know.

So, if you find a better way, let me know.

Absolutely will. I just get so frustrated when I want to be smooth, but it itches when it grows back.

Well, I'm male so it may not apply completely, but I have also been helping my female partner with pubic hair removal lately, so I can discuss it from her perspective as well.
I think waxing at home is something you will want some help with because it will just be hard to make sure you are applying it exactly where you want and removing it completely. Depilating you can definitely do on your own and it is much faster. There is discomfort with both, but both get rid of the hair very well, it takes a while to grow back (longer with waxing than depilating), and neither is as itchy as shaving when it grows back. Most depilating creams say to not put them on genitals, but we haven't really had a problem with it, but there is a warming sensation. We hop into the shower and wash it off with soap and water afterward though. I think Nair has improved so there is not as much odor and their creams often have conditioners to help the skin (vitamin E, aloe, etc.).
Bottom line, depilating is easier than waxing especially if you are doing it on your own. Waxing might have a better, longer lasting result, but it takes more time and effort.

Thanks so much for the input. Is Nair your depilatory product of choice?

I have used a personal shaver before and it's the best thing I have used before getting laser treatment. It still feels pretty smooth. I did not like spending too much time on shaving and waxing and at least I would not have in-grown hair or itches.

Thanks, I'm really thinking I need to look into one of these. What kind of personal shaver would you recommend?

I shave and I just can't get as smooth as I'd like. I tried a home waxing kit on my boyfriend and he screamed. Would not recommend.

If it says not to put it on the genitals, then that means it is not safe or might not be safe. I personally wouldn't want to take the risk.

I go for the full Brazilian wax, I spend $60 every 5 weeks or so and frankly I think it's worth it. My hair grows ridiculously fast and i still only need to wax every 5 weeks give or take. It's the only thing that gets me completely soooooth, lasts, and as i'm prone to ingrowns I notice less with waxing than any other method. but thats just my $.02

Depilatories are made from extremely strong caustic chemicals - I can't even take them on my abdomen - much less more sensitive skin. I can't even fathom getting this stuff anywhere near genital skin - which for women is intimately linked with their extraordinarily sensitive inner vulva.

I have no experience with wax.

For me shaving is the lesser of evils. If I make sure there is adequate preparation (hot shower), a high-quality shave lotion (conditioner) a sharp-fresh razor (Fusion) and a good post shave toner - my wife and have successfully minimized irritation and ingrown hairs.

Good luck with what ever you choose. In my opinion, the added sensitivity to sexual stimulation is worth the effort.

Yea, once I'm not in college anymore I might have the money to do that. That would be my ideal.

I had bought a Philips bikini trimmer/shaver, it has three interchangeable heads. I would shave for a smooth feeling after trimming the hair.

Apparently the model I have has been discontinued, but there is a 'Bikini Perfect' model that looks like the upgrade of my shaver. The shaving head looks more convenient. It's a really good product.

One of my friends just had her eyebrows threaded for the first time. It would probably take waaay too long to do your pubes like that.

Totally agree, unless you just use that for a finishing touch after waxing. I used cold wax and sometimes a few hair would resist.

By saying I would shave, I mean with the electrical shaving head. Not with a razor.

If I can get really smooth with an electrical shaver, I think I would be all for that. I've heard you get less rash and ingrown hairs. Right now I'm trying to shave every day since the photo shoot is coming up soon. My friend should be getting her personal shaver this week and I'll see how it goes with her. I just don't want to have any rash when I have the shoot. It's only 3 weeks till he comes.
Wow, I'm so getting nervous.

So what's so special about these personal shavers? Are they just little electric shavers?

Yes, one of the head is an electric shaver, but you also get a trimmer that you can adjust and an epilator. It's practical, I use the epilator to do my arm pits.

This seems like the newer version of my bikini trimmer at Amazon.

Pros:
Interchangeable heads (Trimmer, Shaver, Epilator)
Waterproof, except for the epilator head (at least for mine).
Rechargeable, and lasts 30isch minutes.
Can be used for dry shaving.
Perfect for a quick trim if you don't have time to shave.
Satisfyingly smooth.
Less ingrown hairs than with regular shaving.
Good value.
Very low maintenance.

Cons:
Not strong enough to give me an orgasm. Mouahahaha!
