How important is the "look" of your favorite toy(s)?

Contributor: Antipova Antipova
I just listed my five favorite, most-used toys. I realized that they are also the five that I think are the prettiest, most gorgeous, or most beautiful toys I have.

Got me wondering how much importance our brains place on attractiveness, and how much on effectiveness!

I can say for a fact that my favorites have excellent function, even if they didn't have good looks. But... I love their looks too! How about you?

Also---what counts as pretty to you? What are your favorites?

I care more about my toys' looks than their function.

Looking at that, I realized if Motion wasn't purple it'd be there too.

Hm. I have the Blossom G, which is very pretty, but I never use it. I also have the Hitachi, which I consider very very ugly, but I use it regularly.

My favorite toys, though, are the ones that meld form and function. I love it when something feels amazing and also looks amazing; the sensuality of the visual and tactile experience makes me far more likely to reach for a toy.

It's hard for me to call something a favorite unless it's pretty as well as effective. A combo is what makes it a favorite. I get in the bad trap of buying things just because they're pretty sometimes. Not the best idea because pretty doesn't always mean it works well. I have a lot of useless pretty things. There has to be both not to be a dud.

Your list IS really pretty!

Definitely a combination of looks and function. I have toys I like which are not exactly pretty. But if we talk favorites, there has to be an aesthetic air about them as well.

I love good-looking toys and I sometimes buy crap-performing toys just because they look so good.

Unless it's hideous with pink and sparkles and whatnot, I don't really care about the look of a toy. If I'm between two that seem very similar in function, then I'll probably pick the one that appeals the most to me visually, obviously. I have the Simply Blown Shiver and the Velvet Touch vibrator, and even though the Shiver outweighs the vibe in looks times a million, I reach for the vibe more often, since I find the girth mixed with the texture slightly painful if I haven't warmed up a lot beforehand.

Function is always most important, but I'm much more likely to lust after/purchase/use toys that are pretty or cute. That said, I'll very quickly come to hate a toy that doesn't work for me, regardless of if it's pretty or not - though there are a few toys that I want strictly as decoration.

I want function and form. If a toy is ugly, I probably won't pick it. If a toy doesn't function well, it'll be forgotten.

I'm more about function than form I suppose, especially when it comes to solo play. With a partner, I tend to want to use the prettier toys, but not if they don't work well!

I do tend to like the look a bit more. I remember when initially browsing sex toy stores online, I ran across one that looked like a popsicle and loved the look of it. Vibrators that didn't look like vibrators seemed really cool to me.

But after my first being the cute Astrovibes Pisces (read: girthy mofo that doesn't carry vibrations terribly well), I'm trying to get more of function in my toys. Yeah, my latest free vibrator was the Twisted Hearts one, but I got it with the uber-functional OhMiBod Freestyle. So I'm slowly growing away from, "Oh, it's so cute!" and more towards function.

while appearance isn't too important, for certain toys, sleeves for example, i don't care for realism. Seeing a realistic toy looks too much like a disembodied orifice, which is rather creepy.

God, I agree with that statement so much. When it looks like a lopped off penis, I find it creepy as hell. Unrealistic colors, please.

I like the looks of toys a lot.
My favorite ones are generally the really cute ones.
My cuffs from Lelo are my favorite ones, even though they're not as durable as some of my other ones.

I also agree that realistic penises scare me.

I find that its often the look of a toy that attracts me in the first place but that's why I have so many pretty looking pink glass dildos lying around that never get much use.

I am getting better at choosing function lately though,
My phase of choosing glass toys and toys with serious curves in them has ended, they just dont suit my body well.

Looks of a toy are not that important. It just so happens that my favorite toy is also my most beautiful one (the Gold-Laced G.)

My bdsm products, it goes both ways. Functionality as well as appearance are necessary. Vibrators and toys of that nature, same thing. Vibrators must have a certain timbre of vibration as well as a nice enough look that they're not too overly unattractive and are irritating to hold.

Most of my favorite toys don't look like toys. They are mostly rechargeable with silicone skin. I wouldn't say being pretty is important for me. I will go for a cheaper glass toy that doesn't have a lot art inside the glass any day over something that's over $200.
However, there are toys I turn down on the first glance because they look terrible.

Most of mine are "pretty" by my standards, but I grab my faves more often because they're more fun to play with! LOL
