To Die For by Vivid - review by Midway through

Vivid uses condoms in their movies, and I really like it. There is also toy use in this movie, which is relatively rare in a lot of the DVDs I've seen, so it was kind of cool! Liza & Kurt's scene sortof spans most of the movie, but I didn't list it more than when it first occurred because it's usually shorts. I do have a lot of complaints about the movie, but I'll get into that later. I rated it a 2 overall, based on complaints, not on the actors or actresses or the script of the movie

Plot
There is so much going on in this plot that it is extremely hard to follow, and I'm not even sure now that I get it. So I'll try. There's 2 married couples. One moves in next door to the other, and an affair starts between Monique and Tommy this way. Apparently Monique and Tommy knew each other previously. That aside, Austin is starting up a night club and a young girl (Haley) that works for her is engaged, and her fiance (Kurt) is cheating on her with a woman (Liza) he is going to stay with for a while. Liza is in the process of getting a divorce. Obviously Haley finds out about Liza and Kurt and is heartbroken. For some reason she decides to bang Kurt after. Both Austin and Manuel end up catching their SO's cheating together. Austin and Manuel end up discussing it with each other and later Manuel sneaks in bed with Austin and begins raping her, though she stops struggling after a few moments and begins to enjoy it. The movie ends with Manuel being arrested, and Austin falling to the floor crying when the police show up, I'm assuming that Manuel killed Tommy and possible Monique also.

Everyone had great chemistry, and was actually pretty good at the plot acting as well, which is generally not present in porn. I was impressed with everyone involved.

Background & Set
A lot of the set is very pretty. A lot of it looks extremely modern, and I like the way they are designed. I believe they said in the behind the scenes that it was all filmed in one house that was rented from some fancy guy, which was pretty neat! I would say that quite a bit of the characters and scripts they've portrayed fit into the background and set well, it's all very appropriate for the movie setting.

Music
There actually wasn't much music to this film. What little there was, had a dangerous sound to it, it sounded like you were waiting for jaws to attack. But there was hardly any music to the entire DVD.

Audio & Lighting
The audio in this movie isn't grande. It seems like footsteps are louder than words 90% of the time, which is a little frustrating when you're trying to pick up on the plot of the DVD. It seems like the sound of what they are doing versus what they are saying isn't adjusted correctly. The sound of movement is overwhelming and the sound of voices is hard to decipher. Later in the movie, there was several audio discrepancies... audio was going, and no one was talking. Weird stuff!

The lighting is hard to describe. Sometimes it looks like they used no extra lighting except for the window lighting in the rooms, then it looks like they had some red "mood lighting" in the room that was supposed to be a soon to be bar. The day lighting makes the film appear amateur, and I can't express exactly why I don't enjoy it, but for some reason I just don't. The red mood lighting was really nice for the scene with Austin & Tommy. You very much know the time of day that is going on in the movie though. I'm going to say that the lighting is just extremely poorly done in this movie, and I feel like it could've improved the movie. There was some night scenes done that it was hard to even see what was going on, even in the up close shots.

Camera angles & Filming
I have a lot of griping to do here. I feel like the camera was choppy between scenes, and a lot of times it gets to where you're like "wait, what just happened?" because it swaps scenes before really finishing the scene. The angles aren't always great, but you always get the usual up close and then not so up close shots. If the lighting was better, then it would've worked better for the camera angles. Despite all this, I wasn't overly impressed with the camera angles in the first place. I can't say that this is chalking up to be my favorite movie.

Experience
My least favorite scene was between Haley & Tyla. I just... I can't even... I mean the girl was using a douche over a toilette and then.. the other girl helped wipe her with toilette paper.. and I just.. don't know how I feel about that. I'm speechless. The makeup and the "natural" lighting in the scene made them both look like drug addicts. They go from like, cleaning one girl's vagina to being in the shower with toys. I'm not sure, this whole scene was just scary. At one point a girl spits (I can't tell which one) and it just.. misses the dildo completely and sits on the shelf she's on.. and her butt gets in it. It's just an overall gross scene. Poorly done, Vivid, poorly done. I am disappointed.

The other scenes were fairly decent or really good. But none were bad other than the aforementioned.

Note on picture quality
This movie is from 2005, and is grainy on an HD TV. Which, at first was odd because we're totally not used to that. But you start to ignore it after a while. But I will say the lighting doesn't help, and there's choppiness to the filming.
