And yes, it does actually write

This is a novelty toy in both senses of the word. It works well as vibrator, with surprisingly powerful vibrations considering the lone AAA battery it takes, while the fact that it's a also a working pen means that it's a lot easier to explain than most toys.

Hey, if nothing else, I am completely satisfied with this toy for helping me learn two definitions: pinpoint and buzzy. I'd always wondered what those meant exactly in reviews, and now I know how it feels.

Use

The Scribbler is a unique toy in looks, if not exactly in function. In practice, the Scribbler is meant more for external stimulation, due its pen shape. The lack of a base means it's basically useless for anal or anything like that; I suppose you might be able to use it for very very shallow vaginal penetration, but I'd hardly recommend it. What it does excel at is the aforementioned external stimulation; its surprisingly strong vibrations and pinpoint nature means that it feels pretty darn good all over your body, especially on sensitive areas such as the clitoris and nipples.

I'd recommend the Scribbler as a decent, discreet first toy. While it is slightly noisier than what I would prefer, the pen shape means it can be explained far more easily than more obvious toys.

Material / Texture

The Scribbler is made of a hard, shiny, chrome-looking plastic. It's very smooth and hard, to the point of it almost being an annoyance; if your hand or the Scribbler is even a bit wet, then it can be a pain to turn of and off. There was no smell or taste that I've noticed, otherwise.

Since it's made pretty much entirely of plastic, the Scribbler ranks pretty high on Eden's Safety Scale-- an 8 out of 10. It's non-porous and phthalate-free, and easily cleaned with soap and water or a wipe down with rubbing alcohol. Since this is vibrator, and thus an electrical device, I would not recommend submerging it in water.

The shiny chrome is a bit unusual for a pen but, as said before, it contributes to the toys appearance of being a novelty item, and is thus fitting.

Design / Shape / Size

The Scribbler looks, and works, like an oversized pen. Mine is a shiny, purple plastic with silver accents and an equally plastic jewel on top that can be seen through a clear, non-removable, plastic cap. It's pretty light in general, despite its relatively large diameter for a pen (though it is relatively small in diameter for a toy), although inserting the battery gives it some additional heft. It's not going to be mistaken for an expensive pen or toy, mind you; as I said, the word "novelty" is appropriate as far as description goes.

Due to its nature, the Scribbler is discreet as a toy, since it can - and will be, if you leave it lying around - be mistaken for a pen. Not even mistaken; it really is a pen. It would attract some attention as an oversized, shiny pen, but at least almost no one will think "sex toy!" on sight. Now if I was treating this as one of my pen reviews? I would not say it's discreet, considering the shiny color and large size. Fortunately, sex toy reviews have different standards than pen reviews.

The fit and finish (oh, wow, the contrast between what I'd normally be checking for in a sex toy vs a pen is making my head hurt) is way below average for a pen of this price point, while being okay for a toy of this price point. The material is nothing special, being made of plastic as I mentioned, while the clear plastic jewel and cap just look cheap. Frankly, it might have looked sleeker if they'd removed those two completely, and possibly removed the silver accent as well. The paint job is rather terrible; it took literally just one use before it started chipping off. This another reason I would recommend never putting this inside of your body.

Functions / Performance / Controls

The Scribbler works equally well as a pen or vibrator. As a vibrator, it's very basic; you twist it near the top for "ON," "OFF," and "OPEN," respectively, so it only has one speed. That one speed is pretty good, though; although the Scribbler is powered by only one AAA-battery, it has surprisingly strong, if rather buzzy, vibrations. The one setting is about three vrooms. I've found these vibrations to work really well with the pinpoint nature of the Scribbler, but everyone is different and your tastes may vary. The downside to the vibrations is that it's surprisingly noisy; it could probably be heard, if faintly, through the door. I think the closest analogy to me would be that it sounds like an electric toothbrush.

As a pen? It's a pretty good pen, actually. It's a retractable ballpoint pen, not a rollerball or a fountain pen, although I would say that the twist mechanism is somewhat less convenient than a click mechanism for retraction. It writes with a good, smooth line, no skipping, and no hesitancy at all in starting. It's great for jotting down quick notes, and I would even venture to say that, if this hadn't been a sex toy, it would be great for children due to the large diameter and light weight. The ink color is your standard ballpoint black; not the blackest black I've ever seen, but functional and readable enough. I wouldn't use this pen for special correspondence or occasions, but let's face it: Cal Exotics isn't a pen company, and they're probably aiming at a different demographic than your usual pen enthusiast.
    • Easy to use
    • Not enough variety

Care and Maintenance

This is a good, basic vibrator-pen and is pretty easy to care for. I usually just do a quick wipe down with Eden's sex toy wipes, which works well because of the smooth surface. Since it's not waterproof, I'd worry about getting water into the battery compartment. At least at this price point (twenty dollars retail, less on a sale), it won't be expensive to replace.

Since the Scribbler is made of plastic (an 8 on Eden's safety scale), it's compatible with basically any toy or lube. Whether or not you should use lube with it is another matter entirely; I wouldn't, because the smooth texture, while it may not attract lint or have the drag that silicone does, makes turning the toy on and off a pain if you're in the middle of using it.

Storage-wise, the pen shape and material is great, because there's zero worry about it. I keep mine in a little pencil holder with a bunch of cheap pens, because the thought of having a sex toy hidden among more innocuous instruments makes me smile.
    • Easy to clean
    • Easy to store

Packaging

The Scribbler comes in a transparent, plastic package with writing upon it. Now normally I would not call any sort of transparent packaging discreet but, like I said, this just works with the toy. It's pretty obvious that it's a novelty item, but it doesn't look like a novelty sex toy; it looks like a novelty pen. It might make a good gag gift, but I'd probably choose something nicer for a real gift. The packaging is also just flimsy plastic, so you can't really use it for long-term storage.

Personal comments

I apologize for the lack of pictures in the review. Please check out other reviews for pictures and size comparisons to pens; I would have my own, but my computer is currently refusing to recognize my phone, so I cannot upload pictures.

Experience

Okay, I completely admit that I requested this assignment because I collect pens, and I thought a vibrator-pen, if nothing else, would be a fun thing to add to my collection. As it is, I'm definitely using it more than I expected I would; the noise it makes can be a downside, but I like it enough that I find ways around this. The relatively strong vibrations and the pinpoint tip is really helpful in this regard, and usefully fills in a hole in my tiny toy collection.

Normally, a lot of people ask to try whatever pen I happen to be using that day or week, but somehow I don't foresee myself bringing this one to class. I'm keeping this one to myself, thank you, and highly recommend you do the same with yours.

Thanks for a really cool review! I guess it was too much to hope that it would actually be made of metal, but it's great to know it does work as a pen AND a vibrator! And it really doesn't get any more travel friendly than this!

I love that it actually does write! That's a must for me in terms of discreet vibes. If they're disguised as something else, they should function as that something else!
