Remote control butterfly - butterfly strap-on vibrator discontinued by Cal Exotics - review by Jess.McCleod

The Remote Control Butterfly (hereby referred to as simply, "The Butterfly") is a strap on clitoral stimulator. The vibrator, which is located in the tail of the butterfly, is controlled wirelessly via remote making the toy much more versatile.

The ways to play with this toy are pretty endless. Whether you're looking for a teaser toy or an aid during sex, spicing up foreplay or a little adventurous public play there's definitely pros to be found with this toy. The one option for speed and no pattern settings for the vibration combined with the slightly awkward positioning of the actual bullet within the toy left it shy of awe inspiring for me but if you want to put a twist on your normal routine The Butterfly has promise.

The Purple Butterfly is made of Jelly which is unfortunate on a lot of fronts. It has an extremely strong rubbery scent to it which I absolutely despise. After one attempt at some oral play while my partner was wearing it I couldn't take the overwhelming smell and threw in the towel. Though, I have to admit, I'm far more sensitive to smells than the average user. Much to my dismay, the scent has not diminished after several cleanings.

Which brings me to the other problem with Jelly toys and that's that they're a pain to properly clean. The design of the Butterfly isn't helping matters at all. The front of the vibrator has a ton of very pretty detailing that's etched into the Jelly material. Being on the front it provides no extra stimulation to the wearer and it too shallow for a partner to feel if they grind against it. It does, however, make clean up that much harder. Since you can't submerge this toy due to the battery pack I would have sacrificed looks for an easy smooth texture that you could simply wipe and go.

It's also important to remember that Jelly is an extremely porous material and therefore should not be shared. All in all the material is extremely limiting and I'd much rather pay a little more for a less high maintenance product.

Besides the actual vibrator I also had issues with the straps. The elastic they're made of is extremely stretchy so if you want to feel that it is on securely then you have to pull it very tight but they're also extremely thin so you get that uncomfortable digging into you feeling. The material is just cheap in general and I'm convinced that overtime it absolutely will stretch out and lose its elasticity.

The wings are fairly large having a 4 inch span and the toy its 4 1/2 inches from tip to tail. The majority of The Butterfly sits on the pubic mound while the end of the body curls down and in to stimulate the clit. I found that the tail could have definitely benefited from being a little longer. Because the battery pack sits in the back of the toy the vibrator is that much further away from your body and doesn't quite curl in enough to make up the difference. When you're wearing The Butterfly under panties it will push the toy closer to you and close the gap but if you're just wanting to slip this under a skirt or wear naked, you may not get the sensations you're looking for.

I'm usually a much bigger fan of straps that go around the thighs instead on one between the legs but in this case, they made a good decision going with the G-String style. I found the straps extremely hard to adjust as it was and they're so thin and stretchy that it is very easy to move it to the side for vaginal stimulation if you choose.

The bullet is located in the tip of the tail and has fairly strong vibes that transmit well through the material. Unfortunately there is no way to replace the bullet that comes with the toy for a stronger one or simply when it runs out juice if you didn't care that it wouldn't work with the remote.

My biggest complaint was with the battery pack. Its located at the very top of the toy and holds two AAA batteries. When inserted into the toy the pack is very secure and I actually had some difficulty in getting it out, so take care that you don't end up yanking too hard on the wires that connect the batteries to the bullet. There is no flap or anything to close off where the batteries and wires are inside the toy nor is there a way to remove all of the electrical components of the toy. This makes thoroughly cleaning it extremely difficult which is not what you want with a toy made of material this porous.

The remote, however, was wonderful. Tiny, minimal, and discreet. Very easy to throw in your pocket and no need to take it out to use it.

The vibrations that The Butterfly gives off are pretty strong and fit our personal preferences well which was lucky since this toy is one size fits all in this department. The remote simply has an on/off switch. No different levels of intensity, no pulse settings. Considering that the vibrations are probably a medium level on most other toys I think this will leave a lot of people wanting a whole lot more if not used as simply a teaser toy.

I was extremely impressed with the remote and the signal it produces. It not only worked beyond the 20 feet listed but also through walls and even from opposite sides of the freezer isles at the grocery store which is usually a wireless dead zone. It way out performed my expectations in this area.

Sound wasn't an issue at all if you're looking into The Butterfly for public play. In a silent elevator you may be able to detect a slight buzz but in a mall, restaurant, or public transport you're perfectly safe to let The Butterfly stretch its wings.

Careful use of warm water and a toy cleaner are your best bet for this one. If needed, you can use mild soap instead of cleaner. Make sure to take the batteries out of the toy beforehand and be careful that no water ends up inside of the electrical compartment. Even if you're positive none has gotten in you're better off playing it safe and leaving this one out to dry before its next use - better safe than sorry.

The Butterfly came with no instructions but none are really needed. It came with nothing but the toy itself, the remote, and the 2 AAA batteries it runs on. So you're on your own with storage on this one!
