Paraben Playground

I think it's strange that so many products are advertised as being "parabens-free," to the extent that I began to believe that they were as toxic as phthalates, only to find them in this highly-rated product.
Published: July 13, 2010
Pros:
Very lovely consistency, long staying power, everything you'd look for in a lube.
Cons:
4 types of parabens are used in this lube, resulting in a horrifying allergic reaction for me.

useful review
Let me start by saying that I desperately WANTED to love Liquid Silk. The reviews I've read have been consistently and overwhelmingly positive for as long as this product has been on the market. The consistency of this lube is deliciously silky and creamy, much like the lubrication produced by one's own body, which I consider to be the ideal. And it has the staying power to back up that creamy texture with some real-world practicality (due to the minute amount of silicone found in it--don't worry! Not enough to ruin a silicone toy!)

HOWEVER--and it pains me greatly to say this of such a widely loved product--Liquid Silk caused such an alarming allergic reaction in me that the simple act of urination would cause me to shed tears for up to five days after each use.

I say "each use" because my silly ass didn't make the connection between the lube and my symptoms. You see, my symptoms were so extreme (red, bubbly, horrifying rash) that I thought I had some sort of STD (or a *gasp!* sperm allergy). It took an expensive trip to the gyno to clear up my misconception.

As a result, I (somewhat understandably, I believe) HATE this product, and steer whoever I can away from it. Gently, of course, explaining that my experience is rare, but that is was so violently awful that I would NEVER wish it upon another human being. We're talking levels of pain akin to a Urinary Tract Infection. Plus a herpes-like breakout. In my dark moments, I thought I might die. Or never put anything in my vagina again, but I feel like those are equally horrible sentences.

Imagine my delight when I discovered that the simple subtraction of this product from my life would return my sexuality (and toilet) to normalcy.

I'm glad I don't have herpes, but I'm very upset with the makers of Liquid Silk.
Experience
I understand that my experience was an extremely rare one, and admit that I don't know the actual amount of parabens actually used in this product.

But I trusted this product name, I trusted this company, and I trusted the reviews I read. That is why I'm publishing this review--so that some other poor soul like me might learn from this experience, as unusual as it might have been.

Me too! I wanted so badly to love this lube, but it just irritated my skin. I was going through a phase where I was getting over some health issues, and was recommended this lube to try. My symptoms weren't anywhere close to how bad yours were, but everything hurt, itched, and burned for days, until I realized, ZOMG it's the Liquid Silk! Once I stopped using it, things started getting better.

THANK YOU for this review! I've heard so much about this lube... only to find that it's riddled with crap I don't want to put in my vag. There's too much praise for this one, I think.

Gah! Thanks for this review--I have highly sensitive skin, so I'm glad to have read this before a purchase and an expensive trip to the Gyno myself!

  • no good?
    • i get the impression that this is crap......
    • Liquid Silk's not a bad lube, but "crap" or "awesome" depends a lot on what you want out of your lube. Like, do you want one for anal play or vaginal? For shower play? Are you a stickler for healthy ingredients?
    • It wasn't bad, but Alan and Michele have a point. What are you trying to get out of the lube?

  • Liquid Silk and Silicone Toys
    • So, while looking through highly rated water based lubes, I came across Liquid Silk. Aside from the bitter taste, no one seems to have any complaints.

However, I noticed that the fourth ingredient is Dimethicone - and I was wondering what everyone's experience with this and silicone sex toys was? Is the silicone in Liquid Silk a small enough portion that it has no effect on toys, or is it generally not recommended for that type of play?

Or does the bonding potential of silicone lubes have more to do with the type/quality of silicone than anything else?
    • That's a really good question because Dimethicone is a silicone.

Basically it should be ok to use as long as the toy is made of medical grade silicone. There should, in theory, be no reaction. I, personally, wouldn't want to test that out on my own toys though. You can do a patch test on a small part of the toy. The reaction should be immediate if there is going to be one.

      Anyone else know about this?
    • I have had liquid silk react to a silicone toy. Which sucks because I love it. :(
