But, a lot of people consider it porn. Many libraries do not allow even Playboy to be accessed.

Slippery slope indeed. Perhaps there should be special rooms for adults to access material not appropriate for children, and there should, of course, be expectations of conduct. No wanking at the library might be good one. Also, perhaps the amount of time spent on "adult sites" could be part of the agreement.

But, IMO, things like Eden and Playboy should be accessible in public libraries. At least when one has an adult card.

No, I don't think porn should be easily viewed in that way.
Of course if ya don't have a porn filter at home and have kids, they will be into it. But in public, anyone underage could be getting into it.
Porn should be viewed in private.

I would say no. Only because children are there. Most spend the summers there.

I don't want to infringe on anyone's right to view pornography, but I do have small children and if someone were watching it at a library where they could walk past ... more
The standpoint for the pro is that public libraries allow internet access to people who do not have it for whatever reason (financial hardshiip, homelessness, etc.). Also, some libraries do have computers in private rooms (not specifically for porn, but for people who have to use them for private information), so it wouldn't necessarily be in a place where everyone would see/hear.

I don't personally think this way, but I also know people who would argue that it's not their responsibility to worry about other people's children and that it's the parent's responsibility to check the computers before letting their kids on them.

This would just lead to libraries getting strict about kids not being on computers. So it hurts kids who might not have access to other computers, and doesn't particularly help adults.

No definitely shouldn't be. All I can think is that I would be pretty pissed off if I brought my kid to the library to pick a book and I found her gawking at a porn scene that had been left open on the comp.

The way our libraries work is that there are computers in private rooms, along with some in the public areas. Also, you cannot leave a computer open to a website if you walk away, you have to log out. There are also time limits to how long someone can stay on a computer.

Also, how does one define "porn?" Is Playboy porn? Yes? What about Esquire, or GQ? Men's Health? Cosmopolitan? What about sites that give sex information, but not explicit sexual content? How far do the "filters" go?

No, I don't want someone in the main area of the library watching an easily seen screen with porn on it, but WHERE do we draw the line?

I do not know.

Should not have porn in library children are in there. Maybe if there was private rooms, but you should not want to look at porn with kids around.

Absolutely not! Porn is for the bedroom/living room, not a public place like a library.

I'm all for unrestricted internet and freedom of speech but if the main point of porn is get a person off, I think that in public should be restricted.
