I identify somewhat openly as a "top," and doing so has been helpful in understanding how the way I think about sex (not just BDSM) is different from how many other people I know think about sex. After more kink-type experiences (and being in longer-term relationships), I know I'm a bit switchy, but "top" still seems to be the most descriptive.
