I think it depends on the gag, I bought the Fresh Ballgag EF sells and gave it a little lick to test it before I went to wash it, there was no rubbery taste at all (wanted to check for when I get around to reviewing it).
I figured I'd wash it anyway just to be safe anyway though.

Your best bet is to skim through all the reviews on the ones you're looking at to see if they mention a rubbery taste.
