Birthday Depression.

Contributor: Airekah Airekah
So, you are another year older, another year wiser. I don't know why, but there is always a short period of sadness that I always go through either right before my birthday, during my birthday or after my birthday. Am I the only one who does this?

Constant worry that my life just isn't fulfilling enough for the age I have become.

I think it's pretty natural, I've felt the same way for the past few years. Best advice I can offer is to just try to use that as a springboard for forcing yourself to step outside your box and do something new and interesting.

Of course, that usually puts a lot of pressure on me to do it on my birthday, which also depresses me, but if you can use it like a sort of new year's resolution thing, it can help you make positive changes. Hope you feel better!

I get that way, too. I feel like I'm 'running out of time' to get things done since I have always been behind or a 'late bloomer' with things in my life.

I wouldn't say I get depressed but I'd say I get contemplative. It causes me to stop and take stock of my life and if I'm living and being the person I really want to be. It's good to stop and reflect, but I don't dwell too long. I got to keep on movin! (bad song lyric reference )

Birthdays are happy for me. No depression ever involved.

I get a little depressed around my birthday, but not for the same reason. I usually get a bit down because it seems like everyone always forgets mine. Not that I need presents or things like that, but my husband's birthday is a little less than two weeks before mine and he gets tons of calls and messages, etc in his email box. I just hate always feeling like the only one who cares about my birthday is me. But then, it's kind of a silly thing to get upset about I guess.

The actual birthday itself is not an issue for me. I'm not worried about getting older or anything like that.

I worry that I'm not where I should be.
And a lot of my friends are married, living with their guys, and/or having babies.

It just seems like I'm super behind at times.

I usually feel the same way. Like this year I'll be 29 and I'm sure I'll have the same thoughts - that by 29 I should be a homeowner not a renter, I should be married, not divorced and dating, that I should have a bigger savings account, etc. They're not necessarily realistic ideas because there is no 'should' to fit everyone, but it still bothers me.

I hit 40 three years ago and ever since then, my life gets better every year...especially my sex life. So, no, I don't get depressed when I have a birthday. I used to be a real type A personality and always worried about everything and very stressed out all the time. I have learned very recently to not dwell on the things that stress me out and cause me any unhappiness and to embrace the positive things in my life. I have been so much happier because of that change in my view of life.

I don't like to celebrate my birthday. I feel like I have to put on a show and would rather just relax.

I don't like birthdays. I find them depressing but also I think it's weird because I didn't do anything on my birthday - my mother did. I try to show her I appreciate her when my birthday rolls around. That's it though. I'd rather people not make a big deal out of it for the most part.

I don't really think much of my bithday. To me, it's just another day. I have too much to look forward to in the coming years to get stuck on the past(or present).

Birthdays are a little disappointing since most people go on and on about ground hogs day and think my bday should be likely themed >_<

I don't get depressed on my birthday but I recently turned 28, thinking I am almost 30!

Haha, I cried on a few of my birthdays. I feel like I've wasted the last few years. Not because I'm unmarried and don't have babies, all that--I care for neither. But I dropped out of school, haven't had an OK job for a while, didn't create as many creative works as I would have liked. I feel stuck. Oh, well, maybe inexperience will keep me young somehow.

Mh, I get that way sometimes, but that might have more to do with the fact that my birthday is very close to New Year's eve (only three days away, in fact).

Most of the time, though, it's an energizer. I freakin' love having birthdays.

I used to until my near fatal car accident. Now my birthday is a reminder that I was still able to be with my loved ones and appreciate life. You don't always appreciate what you have until you almost lose it.

I definitely feel the same. I had my best birthday when I turned eighteen and my friends and family threw me a surprise party. I have never felt so loved and special since then!

This year, I'm feeling really sad because I'm far away from my best friends and family and the friends I have here are also my classmates in my grad program. Unfortunately, we have 15 page paper due the day after my birthday, so no one has the time or energy to get together and celebrate with me I know it's not their fault, but I'm feeling really lonely and sad about it!

I get that too. I don't celebrate birthdays really, I usually just have dinner with my family and enjoy cake. I like to spoil others on their birthday but I don't like to do much for mine really. With every birthday it seems like time passes faster.

Transitional phases can be hard. Focus on self care, and small steps towards fulfilling a dream or enjoying a hobby!
