Ok, so now that we're ok with how we want to run the fundraisers, are we ok with starting collection tomorrow? Is that too soon? How do you feel about taking donations until Tuesday, the 15th? That way we have enough time to make sure we can get ... more
I think that would work perfect.

Im going to pirate dinner adventure this thanksgiving. Last year we went to medieval times. Since my boyfriend and I can afford to fly home or pay for a huge feast for ourselves weve been going to themed dinner places, lol.

I am curious about the family that took advantage of everyone's kindness last year (I have only been using EF for a few months now). How did the scam come to be known?

I honestly can't remember right off the top of my head, I'd have to go dig back through the threads from last year.

Anybody else remember right off the bat?

The sponsor got suspicious when the requested item list included designer items. She also found out that the family lived in an affluent neighborhood in a rather large house. The family seemed to stretch the truth as to their neediness with the charity.

I don't remember exactly. It wasn't a huge deal, it was found out in time. But, I have lived long enough to not have as much faith in all my fellow humans as some others. From what I remember, a family entered a program for "needy families" and was about to be chosen to get some donations from Eden, and it was found out they had plenty of money. It was sad, but this is so common, it bothers me terribly.

I run a small business and do sliding scale and even pro bono work, and have seen people who drive Mercedes try to get supplies intended for very needy families all the time. It's sad.

Ok, now as far as volunteers go, I think we should definitely be able to sponsor 2 people for Thanksgiving meals, and what do you guys think about 3 for Christmas? I wasn't sure what would happen if we tried for 4 or more and ended up with some lackluster participation split across everybody.

What do you guys think?

Those numbers sound good. And do-able.

Awesome.

Also, it totally just clicked that you're not normally here for evening things, so it's really great that you could be joining us this evening.

I think 3 for Christmas would be good. If we happen to raise more than expected, it just means more gifts which no one would complain about.

It is sad. Sometimes people who do need are the ones to say that others are more in need. I don't mean because of pride, but out of goodness.

I'm just popping in here but as a former coordinator for our church's project (for Prison Fellowship - the kids that is) - I just wanted to point out that we need to also work on Christmas pretty quickly because most coordinators are already contacting families by this point and by Thanksgiving most churches and malls and stuff that do the Angel Tree type program - have already started handing out names and lists.

I was contacting people (families receiving gifts) for Angel Tree by 11/15 - for Christmas gift ideas.

Themed dinner places. Basically you eat dinner with your fingers served by wenches. And there is usually a fake fight set in that time period. The medieval times one had horses and its a big arena. And the pirate one is on a fake pirate ship crashed in a fake ocean. And you eat things like chicken and soup out of a cup and watch them act out a story. Its really fun.

There's an Angel Tree at our daughter's school. We always choose the older kids, because people always want to buy for the babies and toddlers. I usually choose boys and girls between 10 and whatever the cut off age is.

Would an Angel Tree work? Or do we want full families?

Ok, I'm going to start working on the forum posts first thing tomorrow to start raising money for our Thanksgiving families, in the mean time you can start sending in donations to me. They can be gift cards from points or that you've earned.

This will all be in my announcement tomorrow, but if you want to sponsor a Thanksgiving family and want a head start, get searching for an agency in your area and get all your information in. The first two people who email me to volunteer and have all the info, and can absolutely do the legwork / shopping, are in.

Just wanted to throw that out there real quick before asking how long donations should run for Christmas and when we should start and end those. Monday the 28th through Tuesday the 13th? Is that enough time do you guys think?

An angel tree coordinator could provide you with a whole family if you asked early enough.

In our church - each family adopted a whole family - I'd say something like "Family 1 is 3 kids, a boy who is 2, a girl who is 4 and an older boy who is 10" etc - and someone would adopt the whole family.
