Developing "acquired" tastes for food

So, I've never liked coffee much, but today I had a cappuccino Lara Bar, and now I'm craving Kahlua.

I was wondering who else has developed acquired tastes for things. Which things were they, and how did you develop that liking toward that food?

I think sometimes it has to do with age. My mom makes sauerkraut soup for the holidays every year and when I was a kid I could only have a few tastes of it before it got gross. Now I love the stuff.

Same thing happened with Japanese food, like sushi, miso, and mochi - it was weird at first, but the more I had it the more I liked it.

Nope, I'm terrified to try new foods

Black oil cured olives. I used to hate these growing up!! My father would always tell me that I wasn't really an Italian unless I liked them. I ate them just because and eventually acquired a taste for them. As an adult, I actually enjoy eating them!

I've had things that I HATED growing up, but now love. Green peppers and squash are the two that come to mind automatically. The green peppers happened when I worked at an italian sandwich shop, we chopped them up fresh for every sandwich and I started snacking on them. I think it was because I would eat them sometimes anyway, and eventually got used to them and started to like them. They're two of my mom's favorite foods, so there was no escaping them.

I have always hated fish, but I try it a couple of times a year anyway, in case I start liking it (my brothers all love fish, and always want me to eat it). I guess there's no getting used to that one!

I agree with Trixie Lipps, tastes has to do with age. But, when I was younger I would hate green beans and potatoes (anything other then mash potatoes and french fries). Now though, I love both

If I don't like something initially then I see no point in repeatedly subjecting myself to it, hoping to acquire a taste for it.

I'm a real stick in the mud about what I eat. I don't try anything new so I don't every acquire tasted for any new foods. My hubby will try almost anything and has found a bunch of things he likes but wouldn't eat when he was younger.

Why don't you try anything new? Just wondering... I always make new things and often don't make the same thing, unless asked.

I think that as I get older I like things I didn't used to.

But, olives have me beat. I am convinced that until I can eat a whole olive without pulling faces and having to spit it out I am not a proper grown up. I even took the advice of a friend who said that if you eat eight in a row you will like them.

No, you don't.

The thing is that I absolutely love tapenade, which I make myself so I KNOW that it is mostly just olives blitzed up. But still, I cannot bring myself to eat a real, grown up person's whole olive.

They have me defeated.
