I was wondering about the dinner and supper thing too. Dinner is most likely my most favorite meal of the day.

Dinner! I know you're supposed to eat a large breakfast, small dinner, but by the time I get to dinner I've been running around all day and I'd love something big and satisfying (phrasing!)

It used to be called dinner if it was a lighter meal or earlier. Supper is a later larger meal. It also had something to do with class. I think the lower class people ate supper, while the upper ate dinner. Could be the other way around, I can't remember now. We don't really socially class like we used to, thank God!, so now it seems to be more of a regional thing. Had a British friend and after some confusion about supper, dinner and tea I looked all this up. X-)
