Eden Gives Back: Community sign up thread

Contributor: Jul!a Jul!a
Hey folks, if you were at the last Eden Gives Back meeting, you helped discuss some really great ideas. If you weren't there, you should go check it out.

Either way, what we're trying to do now is to figure out who can do what. Every little bit helps here. What are some of the things your community needs? How can this community help you help your community? Have a local women's shelter? Maybe they need canned food, clothing, or kid's toys. If you have time to donate, maybe you could help out there one day a week.

Sign up here to let us know if you're interested and how you can help out. All it takes is your name, and whether you can donate time, money, or materials. Nothing here is too small, and together, we can turn something small into something really great.

Here's a handy dandy form to help you figure out what you can do to help!

Please fill out form! (copy and paste below)

I can donate Time: (yes or no - I have time available to help)

I can donate Materials: (yes or no - I have items I am willing to donate like toys, canned food, clothes, etc.)

I can donate Money or Run Fundraisers: (yes or no - it's pretty obvious how money helps )

Ideas for fundraisers: (Local bake sale, walk-a-thon, craft fair, etc.)

Ideas for 'drives' that will not require money: (Canned food, cereal box tops, batteries, clothes books, toys, etc.)

Ideas for community improvement and clean up projects that require little to no money: (Adopt a highway, clean up a park, adopt an elderly person to help with shoveling and mowing, etc.)

Ideas for organizations we could work with: (like the adopt a family or no kill animal shelters)

I just wanted to give this thread a bump.

I have lots of clothing and books that I could donate. I just need to narrow down which organization to donate to since there are so many worthy causes.

I still need to do some homework by investigating some of my local organizations. I love the idea of helping out a refuge center that helps those who have been abused and who are desperate for a fresh (and safe) start.

I am not really sure of the things in this area really still kind of new to it.I guess I never have really done local organization's really. Usually I try making little friendship type bracelets to sell for LLS( Leukemia and Lymphoma Society).

But right now I am just planning on sending a couple care packages overseas to the troops.

I am just worried about local type organizations because I don't know how to figure out if they are legit or not. Does anyone know this? I mean on how to find out if a local one is legit?

I'm very interested in helping out here, have already mentioned one community fundraising project that I am eager to head up... I'm also very interested in helping with workshops on local activism topics, like seed bombs and glitterbombs, the concept of fashion as protest (link), tools for organizing and networking, thoughts on effective and artful action... you get the picture. I definitely have lots to give.

I can donate Time: Yup!

(I can donate Materials: Yup! Definitely the ones you already listed.

I can donate Money or Run Fundraisers: Depending on the time of month, money can be tighter than others, but I can run a fundraiser.

Ideas for fundraisers: I don't have any additonal ideas at this time. (I mentioned things in the meeting thread.)

Ideas for 'drives' that will not require money: None additional than those listed and already mentioned at meeting.

Ideas for community improvement and clean up projects that require little to no money: None additional.

I have a bit of time I could donate, but I'm also currently raising money for my Relay for Life team so I've got that big fundraising event on my plate already.

I'm in the process of sending out emails/feelers to some of the LGBTQ centers here in the local area to see what their needs are. Then I can determine what I want to do!

What about a Random Acts of Kindness sort of thing? We could all report any good deeds we do for strangers on a monthly thread, or something, and then maybe have a gift card drawing where we put all the names in a hat and pick someone?

I like the idea of RAK but I would prefer that no GC were involved. That is jsut my opinion though, the gift card kinda makes it a RAK with benefits.

Bumping again -in hopes that more responses come in.

I can donate Time: (yes- I have time available to help)

I can donate Materials: (yes- I have items I am willing to donate like toys, canned food, clothes, etc.)

I can donate Money or Run Fundraisers: (yes if I can)

Ideas for fundraisers: (Local bake sale, walk-a-thon, craft fair, etc.)

And most of these ideas I can do as well: I just have to narrow it down

I haven't heard back from any of the organizations I've contacted. I'm a little frustrated.

Oh that sucks, you would think they would get back to right away, with the way things are going in the world, that the offer to somehow help would be first on a list.

Hopefully, you hear back soon. Maybe they are dealing with Spring Break too, somehow.

Might I inquire into which ones you were interested in. I am still in the process of trying to figure out things I can do. I get the added benefit of having kids willing to pitch in so our chioces are limitless (okay, there is a limit but you get what I mean)

Very frustrating. Especially the Safe Schools program. It's something I feel really strongly about.

I found out about People To People, is a great organization, I took some toys there 2 months ago. Also Aspca, for animals. # things I would love to be able to do is protect our animals, children, and our earth.I am on the NRDC panel, and this is a variation of protection for wildlife and our earth. I donate to ASPCA when I can and try to donate for the children and the hungry to.
