Eden Photographers Club Meeting - Tuesday, September 20th @ 7 pm EDT (Topic: Using negative space to your advantage)

Contributor: Vaccinium Vaccinium
It’s time for another meeting of the Eden Photographers Club! For September’s Eden Photographers meeting, which will be held on Tuesday, September 20 at 7:00 EDT, we will be covering negative space– a topic that was voted on and selected by you, the EdenFantasys community. Negative space - that area of a photo that is relatively devoid of features - can be a...well...negative for your photos, but under the right conditions, it can help transform a photo into one that is provocative and draws in the viewer of your photo.

Also, remember to bring one photo that you would like to post during our meeting that everyone will critique. Critiquing and being critiqued improve you as a photographer, and I'm hoping we can begin focusing on critiquing during these meetings as much as the tutorials I present.

Also, two EdenFantasys gift cards will be awarded during the course of the meeting.

Finally, as usual, this is your chance to take ownership of the Eden Photographers Club. It is where you will be able to express you opinions on where you want to see the club headed, ideas for new activities, and topics you would like to see discussed. Of course, like all EF meetings, it will be a fun and free-wheeling opportunity to socialize with other EFers.

So, please join us for the meeting. I’ve you’ve attended before or have yet to make it to a meeting, everyone is welcome!

Just a reminder: make sure to get a photo ready to link during the meeting that you want to get critiqued.

Mouseover the "i" next to the Links and formatting above the box where you type your post to learn how to post an image if you've never done so before (last example).

Sigh... I'm going out with my hubby for his birthday dinner tonight. We were going to do it last night, but had to re-schedule. So I'll miss this meeting. Sorry.

If for whatever reason, you need pictures, feel free to use any from my Tumblr account. link

I'll be by to read how the meeting went later.

My photos on hand may be repeats, but I'm more than happy to have them critiqued by my peers all the same. Looking forward to the meeting tonight!

Ok, I have one that I know you've all seen before, but it's always been one of my favorites and I'm curious as to the artistic aspect of it I guess.

I think I have one that Ill use since it goes by the rule of thirds negative space theory.

Well, we just need one. I don't know how long it will take to get through everyone's photos, so I don't want too many photos out there to be critiqued at the same time. If there is time at the end, though, then another photo would be fine.

Welcome to the seventh meeting of the Eden Photographers Club! I hope everyone had a good month of thinking about photography and looking at the world through a photographer’s eyes. I want to thank all of you who are here tonight. With summer winding down and autumn rapidly approaching, I would hope all of us have had more photography.

This is usually the place where I'd implore all of you to submit photos to the Eden Photographers tumblr site, but that has gotten so little use, that I'm not going to press the issue so much. It will remain open for any of you who desire to do so to post photos for critiquing, but I am hoping that critiquing will take place in these meetings going forward. All of you who have participated in the critiquing over the past couple months in these meetings have done a wonderful job, so I hope all of you will be comfortable posting one of your photos later during this meeting for everyone to give a quick critique.
First, though, I'll go through a quick tutorial on how you can use negative space to your advantage.

Before we get started, is there anything anybody wanted to bring up about photography or the club?

I think my sister has had enough of them that they now need to use the third generation antibiotics on her. The others just won't work any more.

OK, moving on, then.....

I posted a poll a few weeks ago about what you wanted the topic of this meeting to me, and the winner was using negative space to your advantage. Negative space is the portion of a photo that is relatively devoid of features or contrasting colors. Most photos have some amount of negative space and that’s not necessarily a…well…negative. Photos that work really well and that have a lot of negative space do so because the photo is as much about the negative space as it is about the subject. To put it another way, negative space can be put to good use of it puts the subject in perspective. Negative space can be a powerful tool in your photographic arsenal if it is an integral part of telling the story of the photo.

Prior to going over an example of how negative space can be a positive, let's look at a photo where it is a negative.

There's nothing wrong with this image, per se. The blade of grass is nicely in focus, the exposure is right, and the raindrops on the grass nicely reflects the colors of the mountain meadow in the (blurred) background). However, there is a TON on negative space, and it does absolutely nothing for the photo. The subject of the photo is the grass and the raindrops, and the negative space doesn't add to the photo. It isn't part of the story. It's just distracting (in the amount that is in this photo, anyway).

Did that make sense?

That is my problem. Ive taken so many antibiotics that they dont work on me. I had spinal meningitis as a baby so they loaded me up and now I have no immune system and no pills work on me.
