Hence the reason why I've moved towards more critiquing being done at meetings.

I understand. Just before this meeting the file I have all my meeting posts in came up as corrupted, so I was sweating a bit there.

I'm having issues with all of my pages freezing as I am trying to upload things. Time to take it to the shop. I guess maybe those porn sites are infecting me lololol!!!!

I think that's a great idea to be honest.

I'm going to assume everyone understood the first post about negative space, so moving forward.....

OK. This next photo is better from the aspect of - and excuse the contradiction - positive negative space.

In this case, the soft yellow negative space suggests to the viewer that this is merely one flower in a field of yellow flowers. It's not the most interesting story to be sure, but the negative space does play a positive role in the photo and it is not distracting. If nothing else, it frames the in-focus flower.

Are y'all seeing the same thing, or is it just me? There's no wrong answer here. My opinion is just that - an opinion.

I feel opposite. I think this one is a little more distracting. The other the green was less distracting for me. But art is subjective.

Yep, I'm following what you're saying. It doesn't overwhelm it.

Honestly? To me I preferred the first photo to this one as far as the negative space goes. I can definitely see where it frames it, but to me this is sort of all one big yellow blob that my eyes can't focus on whereas the blade of grass was definitive and easy to focus on.

OK, here we go. The first person to answer this question correctly wins a $25 EdenFantasys gift card. When is the last day to submit photos for the Eden Photographers/EdenFant asys 2012 calendar?

Congratulations Starkiller87! You’ve just earned yourself a $25 EdenFantasys gift card! I'll admit, this was more of an attempt to pimp the wall calendar and implore all of you have not already done so to submit photos, but a $25 gift certificate is a $25 gift certificate, so I've sure none of you are complaining.

But seriously, submit them before September 30, PLEASE!!!!!

Criminy, this meeting is dead tonight.

The next photo is one those of you who have attended these meetings before probably remember, but it is still quite relevant here.

This isn't as stark an example of negative space as in the previous two photos, but there is nevertheless a fair amount of negative space. The negative space here is essentially everything in the image that isn't the marmot and the rock. However, the negative space makes the photo more eye-catching than if it was merely a photo of the marmot filling the frame. The negative space is what gives the photo its dreary overtones and what makes the marmot seem lonely and sad. The negative is as much an important part of the photo as is the marmot itself.

Do you agree?

Yes because it allows your attention to go to him without being too busy everywhere else. P.S. I love him!

I'll be honest, I'd love to give you an example of a truly great image of mine that uses negative space to tell a beautiful story or capture your minds, but I don't post my absolute best photos on EdenFantasys so I can keep them for the books I'm working on. I'm not saying that to gloat, but rather to point out that many of my best photos are actually my "best photos" because they use negative space so well to capture the situation.

Oftentimes your subject (e.g., a dog, a child, a tree) can make a great image in and of itself, but sometimes you will want to say more about your subject. Sometimes you will want to express an emotion such as loneliness or desperation or put your subject in context (e.g., desolation, enormity, insignificance). Negative space can convey these emotions and contexts. It can make your photo more than merely a capture of the subject of your moment, but also the mood. And when your photo can capture a mood effectively, you are almost assured of capturing the hearts of your viewer.

I know this was a shorter tutorial than usual, but I wanted to make sure we have enough time to critique. That said, if anyone has any questions about negative space, please do not hesitate to ask them now.
