Good question. I recently tried a shave product, Max shave balls n all sensitive shave cream, and compared it to regular shaving cream, and hair conditioner. The Max Shave seemed to stay put better, shave more closely and I had fewer nicks (none with max shave). A lot of its ingredients are very similar to any found in a dozen cosmetic products - this does have a small amount of sodium hydroxide in it which I think really helps to soften hair proteins.
