Stiffer Silicone?

Contributor: Incendiaire Incendiaire 07/20/2012

I got a Super Big Guy today and have been playing around with it, and I'm certain that the silicone is stiffer than what's normally used in Doc Johnson toys.

I've been bending it, squeezing it, and comparing it to the other silicone toys I have from Doc Johnson, and it definitely feels firmer and less flexible.

I'm wondering if anyone else who owns this toy has had the same experience.

Does the Super Big Guy feel as though it is made from stiffer silicone than other Doc Johnson toys, in your experience?

Also, if anyone from Doc Johnson has a definitive answer that would be great.

Hi Incendiaire! We actually make our silicone products in a variety of hardnesses (also known as "shores").. and the Super/Big/Super Big Guys are in a firmer shore than some of our dildos or plugs that you may have tried. We use a harder shore of silicone depending on the intended use of a product. For some anal toys, this makes sense for the user. For cock rings, it's a more flexible shore. And so on.

You can read about shores of silicone on Wikipedia here - there's a section under 'Special Grade' that explains how shore ratings work.

Thanks Victoria, that's really helpful to know. Previously I had been working on the assumption that any silicone product I bought from a single company would share the same properties, so it came as a surprise when the Super Big Guy was harder than I was expecting.

In all honestly I'm going to highlight the firmness as a negative when I write my review, as it just didn't work for me, but perhaps it will appeal to someone else. I hope the feedback will be useful for your company.

I recently purchased the mood naughty 2 and 3, having bought the original mood naughty plug about a year ago. The 2 and 3 are much firmer than the original. Being in the same product line I assumed these would be similar, but something has definitively changed. Maybe the 2 and 3 are intended to be different, but I expect this is just a change made sometime during the past year, and would be the same for an original if I purchased it today. I really wish the 2 and 3 were as soft as the original.

Size also seems to have an effect on firmness. I have two toys of the same model, but different sizes, that I ordered from a company that let me select the shore of the silicone. Both are 8s. But the smaller one is a fair bit more flexible than the larger one, simply because there's a lot less bulk (the small's widest part is 2" across, while the medium's is 2.5".) And from the forums on that company's website, that's a fairly common thing, so it's not just a mispour of one toy.
