#SummerPleasure - Summer Block Party

Contributor: Ansley Ansley

The Summer Solstice is literally days away and it's time to kick the summer fun into high gear! While it is true that the economy isn't exactly ripe for extravagant vacations for most of us, there are still plenty of things to do that don't cost a lot of money. What are your plans for this summer? Do you have any cookouts, pool parties, or camping trips planned?

Just like the Earth has seasons, so do our lives. Summer is typically a time of transition for many of us. We start new jobs, find new homes, meet new people, and of course there are momentous events like weddings and graduations.

Do you remember where you were and what you were doing when you graduated high school or university? When did you feel you had completely transitioned into adulthood as we know it?

What would you define as either the best summer of your life, or the "summer" of your life - as in if you were to divide your life into four seasons (winter, spring, summer, and fall), where would you end spring and start summer?

I actually didn't graduate high school; I took (and aced) my GED at 25. I quit school at 16, because there wasn't much of a future for me in regard to college. I went to work and my first job was at a movie theater. Eventually, I worked my way into big corporations and learned on the job as an administrative assistant. This period of my life falls, mostly, in line with how one would think of autumn. I was working myself to the bone trying to harvest success out of my efforts. It was a very crazy period of time for me. Followed by a dark and dreary winter that last about five or six years.

I don't think I've experienced the "summer" cycle of my life just yet. I feel like I've just hit spring and things are blossoming and progress is being made. It's a different place than I've ever been before. It feels nice. Really, really nice.

Anyway, we've got a couple of tentative plans for the summer but nothing in concrete and we're not really big on doing the grilling thing unless there is a colossal amount of shade available.

The best summer of my life was the one in which I met my partner, I was out camping with some friends when he came along, that was 7 years ago.

We will definitely be doing some BBQing, but we do that year round. We've got a boat, so we will be hitting the water this summer, doing some camping and hiking with our dogs.

That's awesome. I met my husband in the spring, but so far this has been the best summer of our lives. *knocks on wood, three times*

What kind of dogs do you have?

School isn't for everyone, but did you complete some level of certification like the GED?

I thought life began after graduation...but I think it was really a while after that. As it turns out, first loves aren't always 'Forever'.

I have to be the cheese and say that last summer was the best of my life! We finally bought our first home, and my beautiful daughter, Ivy, was born!!!

We love going on a few shorter getaways every summer, and of course we do cookouts!

I'm getting some culture this summer while spending time with my family. We'll see plays, concerts and a ballet.

I feel kind of stagnant in my life so I guess I'm in winter?

I was with my partner already, but that whole year was stressful for me. All I wanted to do was get out of school as fast as I could. And after that I never looked back. I did graduate, but my whole senior year was a joke. I should have been offered the chance to graduate the summer before because I only needed two credits two graduate, but NO you HAD to be a senior to take the classes. I didn't attend my graduation, but I had an open house. All I wanted to do was party. I had fun, but I also had responsibilities to attend to. I moved out of my parents house that fall after my miscarriage. 2007 was a stressful year for me. But I feel like I was an adult well before I graduated. I was very responsible and had a job from the time I was 14 up.

This summer I plan on hanging out in the AC and going to the Zoo a few times. Other then that, it won't be any different.

I'm only 20, so I don't know how I'd divide my life up, "season-wise", but the summer after I graduated was a pretty great one, even though I was super busy.

My PERFECT summer would be in Hawaii at the new Disney Resort. Unfortunately, we can't afford it. Someday, I guess.

I've had lots of great summers so its hard to pick just one "best" one. The first summer I spent with my partner was a good one. We had just graduated high school, I moved in with my dad and then moved to a new city towards the end of the summer. We had lots of fun camping, spending time with family, fishing, going to the beach, etc. The year was a stressful one, but I feel like I had really transitioned to adulthood long before I graduated high school. Once I left home, it was for good. It's been rough but that's life.

This summer we have our big fishing trip coming up and my partner's big birthday bash at our family cabin in August. Other than that, I'm currently looking for a new job, taking it easy and trying to stay cool in this heat

When I graduated, I started college 3 months later( after working all summer). I still don't know if I feel like an adult completely ( and I am 37)

This summer is gonna be spent looking for a job, like I have been doing for the last year.

I would say the best summer of my life hasn't occured yet. I have had good things happen to me, but I feel like the best is yet to come. I have faith that it will happen, I just need to wait for it.

When I graduated high school I started going out with my current girlfriend and prom. Tomorrow is our 5 year anniversary and I couldn't be happier . We have had great summers but I'm sure there is still much more to come.

We have our annual fishing trip this summer that we are both excited for. I am also looking for a job, so that's what I will be doing this summer, working and fishing when I can.

I don't believe that I have ventured into adulthood yet but I feel that I matured a lot since leaving my parents house 5 years ago. I don't think I would be the same man I am today if I had stayed home with my parents

I would have to say that the best summer I have ever had was right after I graduated from high school. Right after graduation ceremonies, a bunch of us all headed to Cocoa Beach for a two day party that I could never forget. Btw, I graduated from a Orlando high school.

I remember graduating, I was so sure about my future plans. Turns out they never happened, haha!
I can't really point out a "best summer".

2003 is the first major summer of my life. I graduated college in May, our house was finished in June, and we got married in July. That winter (Dec 1) I got my first job.

We don't have summer vacations, my husband works all summer and he isn't in to traveling even if he was off. I think my best bet at traveling is when my in-laws retire in a couple years they want to take the kids to either Florida or California to Disney. I'll just tag along.
