Green? Really?

I love the Tantus line of C-rings. All the benefits of a rigid ring with the comfort of flexible silicone. Great stuff.

Here's my issue. I received a new Tantus Advanced C-ring in the mail today and happened to glance at the product packaging. Right there at the bottom: "Manufactured 100% Green", printed inside a little tree emblem. Awesome. Great products AND they're environmentally friendly.

There's just one little problem: THERE'S NO RECYCLING CODE ON THE PLASTIC PACKAGING. Seriously? You're going to advertise this as a "green" product and then force us to stick the packaging in a landfill for 500 years? Are you kidding me?

Please, Tantus, give us a recycling code. It's not that hard to stamp a little number on your product packaging. Some of us really care. Thanks.

If you go to Edenlink you can directly email Tantus with your request instead of hoping that they'll see this on the forums. Some reps visit quite often, some don't. I'd give that a shot if I were you.

I'd just toss it in with the rest of the plastics and let the center people figure it out.

Thanks for posting this! How very odd. I checked several types of our clamshell packages here and they have a code with the little triangle symbol. The type of plastic used in the packaging has not changed, to my knowledge, but I can certainly check. I'm wondering if somehow the symbol was left off....

At any rate, you have certainly hit on an issue that we care about, deeply. We're looking at different types of packaging, and trying to find a balance between what the needs of retail stores are, what's environmentally responsible, and what's going to be affordable. Also, it's come to my attention that not every area recycles all kinds of plastics; the LA metro area, as an example, recycles all plastics coded 1-7, but many communities only recycle two or three types.

We hear your concerns. We are indeed listening, I can assure you, and are working towards continual improvement. Thanks for giving us that feedback.

Thanks for the reply. I'm glad to know this particular packaging was a bit of a fluke, from the sounds of it. I kept the clamshell, btw, and have double and triple checked that I didn't somehow miss the code. It's definitely not on there anywhere. Like I said, it was an Advanced (1 3/4") C-Ring, purchased late last week. Hopefully you can track down the glitch that caused it.

I understand what you're saying about the recycling codes too. From what I've experienced/researched , Code 1 is universally accepted, with Code 2 not far behind, but Codes 3-7 are hit or miss based on your particular area. Of course, manufacturers can't do anything about that, and I know some plastic resins simply aren't suited to certain tasks, so there's no reason to complain about. I'm just really in favor of giving consumers the option of recycling it if they can.

As I said, I love your products. I just like to see them the best they can be. Thanks again.

Thanks, that's great to hear! I think there might be more that are missing; I even found a few that had the little arrow-triangle-dealie but no number at all. Argh.

We're in the midst of doing some strategic planning so I will make sure to mention that the recycling is important to customers. Me, I like the Alumina's packaging best - it's a paper box setup, and it looks great. Retail stores often don't love it, though, because unless it's open you can't see the product. They're clamoring for something that shows the product well....

Anyway, enjoy your new ring, and I will continue the research apace.

Reminds me of a lot of businesses who claim to be green, such as a juice bar or cafe, when I go to throw away bottles, I don't see a recycling bin. I ask them to recycle the bottle, and they tell me to throw it in the trash. How disappointing.
