Instructions on cleaning toys

Contributor: SMALL BUT MIGHTY SMALL BUT MIGHTY
Got all the goodies but some are confusing on how you use or where to the batteries. I understand that a lot of toys can be used in many different ways. But some don't even have simple washing instructions. Water and regular soap or toy cleaner. Because of the different materials of the toys I want to be sure I'm cleaning them correctly.

Well, I'm not sure there is a single "right way" to clean toys. A lot of it comes down to personal preference, but I can certainly tell you my rules and rituals for toy-cleaning.

Toys that are waterproof or splash-proof are obviously the easiest and simplest to clean. I typically rinse them under warm (but not hot) water in the sink, then apply my cleaning product of choice (either spritz on some toy cleaner or lather it up with unscented antibacterial hand soap), then scrub it with my hands for 20-30 seconds. I'll use a soft-bristled toothbrush to get into any crevices or texture that can trap fluids, for toys that have that (not necessary on smooth-textured toys with no crevices). Then I rinse the toy thoroughly under warm water in the sink, then I pat it dry with a clean, lint-free towel. (You can choose to just leave it out to air-dry if you prefer, but we have so much pet hair in our apartment that leaving anything out for more than a few minutes sees it quickly covered in fur, so that's not a great option for me personally.) Once clean, I put it back in its storage baggie and put it back in my toy box, all clean and ready for the next use!

For toys that are not at least splash-proof, my method is similar, except I'm much more careful about keeping the battery compartment dry. I still usually run the "business end" of the toy under the sink, I'm just very careful to keep water away from the handle/battery compartment. Alternately, you can use a wet/damp towel to rinse off your cleaning product from non-waterproof toys, if you don't feel comfortable running it under the tap. If I end up getting lube or body fluids on the handle/battery compartment of a non-waterproof toy, I usually just wipe it off gently with a wet wipe (sometimes I'll spritz a little toy cleaner on the wet wipe first).

To sterilise toys (which is only possible for toys made from non-porous materials like silicone, glass, and stainless steel), I usually just run them through the dishwasher on the top rack with no detergent, although this method can only be used on toys that have no electronics, as the heat will kill the mechanics on toys that have them (you can also boil non-mechanical toys made from silicone, glass, or stainless steel; I prefer the dishwasher, but that's just personal preference). To sterilise electronic toys, I usually just wipe it down with rubbing alcohol, allow the alcohol to dry, and then rinse it thoroughly. You can also use a 5-10% bleach solution instead of rubbing alcohol, if you prefer. For what it's worth, I typically only worry about sterilising toys if I'm planning to share them with someone else, or if I've used a toy anally that I want to use vaginally. If I'm the only one using the toy and if it's only being used in one orifice, I just wash it with toy cleaner or antibacterial soap and call it a day.

And once again, you can only sterilise toys made from non-porous materials. Do NOT attempt to boil, run through the dishwasher, or wipe down with bleach solution or alcohol if the toy is made from porous materials like plastic, jelly, TPR/TPE, Cyberskin, etc. For those materials, just wash them with toy cleaner or soap and water. Because those materials are porous, they cannot ever be fully sterilised, and attempts to do so will usually destroy the toy and make it unusable. Because of the porous nature of these materials, toys made from them should not be shared between people who are not already fluid-bonded, and also shouldn't be used vaginally after being used anally.

I hope at least some of that was helpful! If you have any more specific questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Edit: Wow, sorry this got so long.
