Foods you'll never eat.

Contributor: K101 K101
My aunt and I were discussing gross things earlier and she told me this story of when she was a kid she loved eggs and her grandmother once asked her what she wanted to eat, she said eggs, of course. She cooked them and my aunt ate them and her grandmother asked if they were good and she said "yes, they were the best!" Then grandmother tells her she put HOG BRAINS IN HER EGGS! Yikes! Apparently that wasn't uncommon, but I was shocked. Hadn't ever heard of that before. Needless to say, she never ate them again.

Anyways, what is a food or foods that you will NEVER eat?

I'll go first.

Hog brains! Lol

I don't think there is any type of food I won't ever eat to at least try, but there are foods I have tried that I just didn't like. Collards and Kale and those types of foods for example. But, I have eaten some pretty sketchy things!

The list of things I won't eat is much longer than the list of foods I will eat. Food and I are not the best of friends. Eggs, in general, are very high on that list. I think they taste like dirt and I don't like the texture.

the idea of liver makes me gag

Sktb007 I totally agree! I could never bring myself to eat liver and I've eaten chocolate covered grasshoppers, meal worms and tons of ants! The ants were not by choice, but the other bugs were and they didn't taste bad, but I was a kid then and could never bring myself to do it now though. Now, I've probably eaten more ants in these past 4 months than I've eaten food! I hate the bastards. They keep getting in my food and drinks. I actually drank some by accident earlier. I hate it because you swallow then feel something in your mouth and pull it out and sure enough, it's the little idiots that managed to survive! Sorry, I'm highly pissed at ants right now. Ha Ha. Last week I stuck my hand in a bag of those quaker oats little snacks, ate 2 of them then thought WHEW! Those have a strong smell... like.... ants! Damnit ANTS! I was furious. Lol

I love pig brains and cow brains, think of them as french sweetbreads, they're delicious if you cook them right!

The only things I'll definitely not eat are food cooked with insects, yikes!!!

Less extreme than some of the previously mentioned foods, but I absolutely can't stand lima beans.

I can't bring myself to eat sauerkraut. The small makes me gag. My Man is Eastern European, so he thinks it's the best thing ever. I don't even like to go into the kitchen when he is cooking it. But, we usually have it with a huge Polish or Czech meal, so I am on duty for the dumplings, the gravy and the side dishes. The smell in the house after cooking Kraut makes me ill, so I go around with candles and non-toxic spray, I clean the sinks with baking soda and vinegar (yep, the vinegar smells better than the sauerkraut) and even will use bleach if I can't get the smell out. Oh, and the garbage goes right out as soon as we are done eating so I don't have to smell that.

Is it understood that I HATE sauerkraut?

I think tomatoes are gross, raw tomatoes anyway. I like ketchup and spaghetti sauce and I can stand the chunks of cooked tomato in sauce, but I cannot stand the taste and texture of raw tomatoes.

I'm also a very picky eater and I hate eggs and countless other things.

I'm actually impressed, and a little horrified, by some of the things people in this thread have eaten. Anyone who can eat brains or insects without vomiting deserves a gold star.

I absolutely LOVE Sauerkraut, but my other half is like you...he can't stand the smell of it! So, I only get to have it when he is out of town (Guess what I'm having for dinner tonight? ).

He is a very picky eater, so most of what doesn't get cooked here is by his choice...by my choice, no "feet" or other non-muscle tissue is ever cooked here. I also can't force myself to cook anything with lamb in it, the smell makes me yarf.

I like to try new (sometimes odd) things though...I currently have a Chayote swuash in the fridge awaiting it's day with the frying pan to be made into "fake" baked apples!

I will eat anything. I enjoy not being picky or having any ill feelings towards certain foods, because it allows me to enjoy the food for what it is, and not what it has been made to be!

I will pretty much try anything at least once. However, I'm not a fan in general of organ meats knowing what they do in a living animal. And for people that are grossed out by eating insects, consider that shrimp and lobster are basically giant underwater bugs and very closely related to insects. Most issues are purely psychological because of the culture we live in.

Hot dogs and peanut butter. Not together but those are my two never eat foods.

Hot dogs because I was like 4 and ate some at my grandmas and got sick, and in my head I cant unrelate the two. And peanut butter because everything about it grosses me out. The smell, taste, and texture. And I love peanuts, just there is a no go on peanut butter for me.

Tomatoes gross me out too when raw! hahaha. If it is in salsa I will eat them or like you said ketchup and sauce. But just raw tomatoes are nasty.

I'll eat a lot of things and am willing to try almost any animal product.... but I refuse to eat veal because I once saw a veal farm and all the poor calves scrunched up in cages and I hate the idea of the poor things never even getting to enjoy an inkling of life. I also have never eaten it before I made this decision so it is a lot easier for me to stay away from it. (i realize it would be delicious)

Liver, intestines, brains, sauerkraut, anything with tamarind, mushrooms, and most squashes.

Strangely, I'm willing to try balut (duck fetus still in egg). Oh, gotta love having Filipino pen pals making me curious about the Philippines...

Those are all on my list too! Lol. I'm totally freaked by those types of foods. Couldn't even imagine eating that stuff.

I'm really loving all the responses! How interesting. I was kind of shocked to see how hated saurkraut is. Lol. I've grown up here in the south, so our saurkraut could very well be different from most other parts, but I don't think it is. It's not my favorite food ever and I wouldn't choose it, but I don't think it's that bad. I'll eat a few bites, but that's about all I care for. Saurkraut and weiners is pretty popular here.

By the way, I've always wondered how fried tomatoes were. I hear about them all the time, but never eaten them. I love fried okra, squash, potatoes, etc. (Yep, I'm southern all right! Lol) I've even had fried freakin' pickles (which I really wasn't fond of, but I LOVE pickles, just not fried) I've also had fried mushrooms.. YUCK! I'm not a mushroom fan. I hate the slimy taste. Anyone else ever had fried pickles or mushrooms?

I know A LOT of people who hate the chunks of tomatoes in chili and stuff and most everybody seems to hate tomatoes period. I used to until I heard this guy who has a serious passion for food and has very particular ways of eating his food - describe tomatoes in chili. I hated them and wouldn't eat them unless they were on a sandwich or hamburger and then one day the food passionate guy gave us this long speech about how he loved huge chunks of juicy tomatoes in his chili. "Squishing between my teeth..." was one way he mentioned them as he trailed off into space. Lol. Anyways, he got really into it when he talked about it and then I decided to try once more to like them and I thought of the way he described his love for them and strangely enough I can tolerate them now! I even LIKE them, but only a few then the rest get picked out. Lol. I dislike tomatoe sauce though.

I learned that some foods, like sauerkraut, have an enzyme in them that some people can smell and taste and other people do not have the receptor for, and thus cannot smell or taste this enzyme. Basically, IF you can detect this enzyme you will not be able to stomach even the smell of sauerkraut!

I have the receptor and My Man does not, therefor he can eat the stuff and I can't. Two of our children cannot stand it and one loves it. It IS good for you, and has good bacteria in it for your digestive system, but it just smells like garbage, old, moldy sitting-in-the - sun for weeks garbage smell to me.

I'm a Yankee and I make Fried RED Tomatoes! MMMMMM. I take one glass pie pan with two eggs, some water and some BBQ sauce in it, and one pan with self rising flour and a little sugar it in. Cut the tomatoes and lay them on paper towels so they dry some. When most of the goo is out of them, dip them first in the flour, then in the egg. THEN (this is important) add Japanese Breadcrumbs to the flour, then redip the tomatoes in the flour and bread crumb mixture.

Fry in very hot oil (just enough to cover the tomato) and butter until brown. YUM!! (I can't believe I just gave a Good Ole Southern Girl a recipe for Fried Tomatoes. )
