Bars tend to be much more breathable, however they do also make ball gags with holes that solve that problem for beginners!

Bars are more aesthetically pleasing and just look a lot less intimidating to me.

if you have jaw issues, definitely go with a bit gag. if you have breathing issues (like can't breathe through just your nose)i'd say a breathable ball gag
