Bars tend to be much more breathable, however they do also make ball gags with holes that solve that problem for beginners!

Maybe for comfort try a small ball gag? I have a small ball gag but I can force it out of my mouth too easily and it does not cause any discomfort so I'm looking at bar gags. Hopefully they will suite my needs better.

if you have jaw issues, definitely go with a bit gag. if you have breathing issues (like can't breathe through just your nose)i'd say a breathable ball gag
