Thoughts on Racist Costumes?

Contributor: sweetiejo sweetiejo
I keep seeing new costumes and so many people say they are racist because they are based off of a specific ethnic group. I was wondering if you feel this way, and if so why?

No, I don't feel that way at all. I'm Chinese and I am not bothered by Eden selling an Asian costume. I feel pretty good when I see other ethnic groups wearing clothes with an Oriental flair, it means these people liked Asian culture, rather than making fun of Asians.

I don't think it's completely about the costume but also involved in the names of the sets.

Copy-writing...when it's your job, things don't have the same meaning as they do on the outside. It's unfortunate, but it happens.

A costume is for pretend. No reason to be offended.

Apparently, it's offensive to want to pretend to be part of another culture?

Recent story I came across that might give another perspective.

Original article mentioned.

When I first commented, I wasn't that bothered to go into detail about how I feel, I'm still not. But I will say that to round up something and say it represents an entire continent of people gives me something to think about. I wonder, how would a "European Dictator" or "American supremacist" costume sell?

I don't see the reason for offense. There needs to be some intent behind the wearer.

I would say it would depend on the particular costume. I personally would veer away from any of them though, there's so many other choices out there!

If you wear any costume with the intent to mock or insult the origins of your costume, then it's offensive (for exemple, "goth" costume, which are mainly a parody, especially when the person wearing the costume pretends to cut themselves and be depressed, or blackface).
If you wear a costume because you genuinely find the traditionnal clothing of a culture pretty and you're interested in this culture, why the fuck not?
