For example, I write a response on somebody's question and I have a heart next to my name. When I click on it, it turns green. What is it for?

Clicking on the heart makes it so that person is in your favorite contributor tab...you can more easily see the things they have posted

It means that when you click it, the person is one of your fave contributors. It is a way that you can track things in the forum. ( you can click to find posts that your faves have commented on)
