I think that's an awesome idea, as long as you can turn it on and off. Sometimes you just don't want to be bothered, so being able to turn it on/off would be awesome.

I would totally be on it! I'm on EF a lot lately, and we could always implement an away option for those who leave EF tabbed open.

I want to have it in real-time and instant message them. You know what I'm talking about? You know on facebook how at the bottom of your screen, it says "Number of people online" and you click it.. and it takes you to all your friends so you can simply chat with them easily and one-on-one.
I think it would be really useful to have that here on EF. I know I have a lot of questions and want to talk to a lot of people on this website. I don't want to have to wait for them to get a notification that I messaged them or wrote on their wall, and then wait for my notification to come in. It takes forever.

Although, I know that they would probably get SLAMMED with IMs, so I am not sure how to prevent that, but I think something of this nature would be cool and very hellpful so some of us that really need help ASAP with something, instead of waiting for posts on threads for help or waiting for an email.

I am totally ambivalent to a chat feature. I would probably be invisible on it except to chat with students when they are working on a review.
