Instant Message/Live Chat

Contributor: ~LaUr3n~ ~LaUr3n~
I love the inbox features on the site, but I was messages back and forth with Newme and it dawned on me...

How cool would it be to have an insight live chat? Or even a instant message java that would be on our profiles or something? We could add friends and see who is on etc.

Would anyone use these services if they were possible?

I would.
Even an IRC widget for EF would be cool.

I don't have a link right now but I'm almost certain that this has been discussed before by contributors and dismissed by admins. I think it's a neat idea but I also think it would be a bit chaotic and not really benefit the site that much. The forums provide searchable information divided by topic but a chat room, while providing instant connections, wouldn't have the same lasting value. <--- my two cents

I remember that thread, and I agree. It would be fun, but there's at least one user-run EF reviewers chat floating around the internet, and some of us basically use Twitter like it was a chat room, sometimes. We don't really need one here, on the site; it just wouldn't really add much compared to the amount of work that would have to go into keeping it a safe, friendly place, because chat rooms are harder to moderate than forums.

I like the idea, but this is a sex toy shop website, not really a connection (or whatever you call them) website.

Good point, this isn't a social networking site. First and foremost, EF is an etailer. An awesome one with an amazing community, sure, but they are a store.

Y'all wouldn't want it to turn into an adult facebook, now would you?

Well said!

Also, we have very active forums, for a site like this. I think it's been discussed that a chat room of sorts would be detrimental to forum activity and, being searchable and full of good stuff, we want to keep the forums nicely active.

This has been asked for a few times, and discussed on the forum. Most recently, we gave a solid answer on the Neuron Geek Wishlist thread.

The answer was:

"Chat room:

Not happening. We have considered this a few times, but with the forums and the messaging system, it seems a bit excessive and would be to the detriment of the forums. However, the forums can easily be used to have back and forth conversations with a group of people, and it will be less exclusive to those who want to see the conversation and learn from it. Private conversations happen in the messaging system. Both needs are met."

And that still stands. This community is about sharing knowledge. Private chats can happen in the messaging system or by exchanging your IM names with each other. You can even choose to make those IM screen names public right on your profile.

I have a suggestion that might make the messaging system a bit more appealing, perhaps.

I really think there needs to be a prominent link for it on every page when you are signed in which shows how many new/total messages you have (so next to "My Account" up top, maybe). If this link opened up the inbox in a pop up, it would serve more as a pager system without changing the functionality and it would be one hundred times more useful than the current set up.

I know that, at least for me, I rarely use the messaging system because it is buried in the site with the new account set up.

Yeah. I think it's a good idea in theory - real time answers to questions. But in actual practice, it would get filled up "hey wanna cyber"

And flame wars that are much more easily and gently dealt with on the forums.

I really like this idea! Even a little (1) next to "My Account" would work. Say, if you had no new messages, it could be

My Account (0)

While one new message could be

My Account (1)

With the (1) as a link to the inbox. It would be small, unobtrusive, but easy to check at a glance while surfing the site.
