Model Diversity?!

Contributor: In Between Soliloquies In Between Soliloquies
I love Eden to bits, but why on Earth is there so little diversity with the models on this site? I think I've seen maybe 3 non-white people (not "dark," just non-white), no east or south Asians, no "differently-abled" people...

There are so many different types of people who frequent Eden that it's shocking (and shameful) that all we see in the way of models are ultra-pale, young white females.

I mean, I'm not going to let this ruin my shopping experience because this is really pervasive in SO many places, but I'm more surprised that Eden is following this pattern also.

Anyone else have thoughts on this?

If I remember correctly, usually the model images are released from the lingerie companies themselves. Eden doesn't have much control over whom is photographed. However, if I'm wrong, feel free to correct me.

Ms. Spice is right, all lingerie images come from manufacturers now. They arrange the photo shoots and provide us with images, we don't have any say in this process.
Don't let it deter you from visiting the site though, as everyone is most certainly welcome here

The models are from the lingerie companies. They are the ones pictured on the box covers when you get the item. It is the same on all the sites that carry that particular brand.

True, and even the Eden homepage almost always has white people on it. It sucks, absolutely. I've noticed it, but never said anything.

It surprises me, but you can't really blame Eden for it. As much as they are a community for contributors, they are a company who markets and sells products by other manufacturers; this is the primary function of this site. Still, great question and maybe something for Admin to consider when they are choosing photos? Who knows, you may have started something here

I don't notice it. The fact that the majority are white, straight couples doesn't really make a difference to me. It would be nice if the images were more inclusive, but it's personally not a problem for me. Advertisement has not ever been something that I felt strongly about.

It doesn't deter me, but I would be happy to see a wider diversity in models in general, body sizes, race, looks, etc. I think variety is awesome.

The lingerie, etc. models all being white, I can understand, because EF has no say over that. They get what the manufacturers give them. It's not right, not at all, but it's not EF's fault. THOSE complaints should be directed towards the manufacturers. But the other advertising on the site is also filled with white people and I agree, this is wrong. I'm white myself and I get frustrated that the default of anything and anyone is "white". There are already so many white people so why must we over-represent them? They're on our televisions, in our movies, and everywhere else so why can't we start representing the other races anywhere we can to try and make up for this injustice? This is particularly true at a place as awesome as EF where everyone is accepted. It would be nicer to see more models of different colors, shapes, and sizes (because they're always WHITE and SKINNY) on the other areas of the site, as well as differently-abled people and other underrepresented groups.

Thanks everyone for the replies!

Since the manufacturers provide their own images, that's something I can definitely understand in Eden's defense. I was more curious about the site's own pages.

It doesn't bother me enough to stop me from shopping the site, especially since this is a tendency that's so common in so many places that if I boycotted every non-inclusive site or company, I'd be unable to shop at 95% of my regular stores. However, it's something to think about. Like Nazaress said, it's the "default," but it's clear that with a community like ours, theres very little about us that counts as "default" or "standard"!

Eden doesn't take the promotional pictures. Blame the agencies.

I actually hadn't paid any mind to it until I read this post, but now that you mention it, you're right. I think that there should definitely be some more diversity with their models.

I do notice that there are more white models, but I also notice that they are usually the same models too. I do believe that Baci is the company I have seen the most diversity.

Right, but this doesn't explain why banner models & etc depict mostly thin white men and women. If Eden were concerned about balancing the manufacturer's images with its own, it would.

Excellent point, Positwist. I mean, it's out of Eden's control what the manufcturers put put there, but Eden's own models are absolutely at their discretion.

Of course the product photos are from the manufacturers, but I do think it'd be great to see some more diversity in Eden's other pictures.
I wonder if Eden produces those photos themselves, though? Or are they just stock photos? This is a really interesting subject!

We work with stock photos. The only photos we produce in house are product images. Not people.

Eden doesn't have any control over who the manufacturers get to model their product. That being said, if you really want your voice heard, contact the manufacturers and request more diverse models.

Im glad to know that the blame should not be placed on EF.

The manufactures are the ones who pick the models for thier shoots. I have been involved with modeling and know that when a company finds a model they like to work with, they use them often and over again. I have noticed that some makers, while using white females, are simply reusing the same set of girls. Also based on where the company is located, there might not be as much diversity in the modeles avaliable.

I have noticed that EF has started using more plus size models. However, the thing that bothers me is the weird photoshopping they do with the models.

I also appreciate the feature of plus-size models. I have noticed some weird Photoshopping things, but that mostly has to do with poor transitions in hair and stuff. What other PS oddities have y'all noticed?

From what I have seen and noticed so far, the models seem to be the ones on the package. So I don't think EF is doing the photo shoots. I may be wrong. But that is just my thoughts.

Yes, I was going to comment, that it is likely more an an issue with the company than Eden, since the pics are manufacturer pics. It's kind of a problem with the entire industry. Though, I would like to see some diversity (racially, and in terms of body types) with the models in the images.
