Do you ever think people talk about subjects that are a bit too personal on Eden?

Contributor: Sera Sera
Sometimes when I'm reading posts and polls I come across things I really don't want to read, and I'm not really wanting at the moment to give any samples-Besides, I'm sure you come across it too.

I just don't think it's always appropriate, and sometimes I get offended, but I try to avoid or ignore it, you know, any personal experiences or comments that I wish I hadn't read.

So here's the question again, and I am really wondering- Do you ever think people get a bit too personal on Eden? And do you think something should be done about it or should we still choose to ignore or overlook things?

Honestly, the ability for things to get personal on here is the reason we come here. We were just discussing the other night how wonderful it is to be able to come to a forum like this and discuss personal things that we'd most likely never discuss face to face. If things get too personal for someone, they can stop reading the thread, but the openness, honesty and acceptance we've seen here is what makes this forum the best sex related site we've found on the net!

Yeah, I do find it nice that I can ask weird questions, maybe pertaining to my body type or the way I masturbate, and I get straightforward unbiased answers. This is a great site, and I agree with you on that.

I'm prepared for that sort of thing when I come to this site, which is personal by its very nature. It's when I'm participating in fandom on LiveJournal and encounter random TMI that it bothers me.

I'm prepared too, but some days I'm a little extra sensitive, I guess. I used to get on Vampire Freaks, (vampirefreaks.com) for scene kids and goth kids of the sort, and then it became so immature and cruel, it was like high school all over again! I'm very glad that Eden isn't so much like that, and that there are still plenty of well meaning and mature adults on here.

There has been one thread that I can think of recently that I believe was a bit too personal for my tastes, but I wasn't offended by it. I think it was more about the lack of 'privacy' in the poll option which made my decision not to participate in the poll. However, it takes A LOT to offend/shock/etc me and I don't believe anything has really breached that for me here.

Agreed with all of this. I like that it seems like no one on here has any inhibitions. Maybe its the mask of anonymity the internet gives, maybe it's because we're all on a sex toy site, maybe it's because that's just the kind of people we are, but whatever it is, I like it. I like the people and I love what they have to say. If it weirds me out or offends me, I just realize that other people have the same embarrassing problems that I do or sometimes have different opinions than me, which is what makes the whole world so great. :]

If something offends you just hit the back button to get out of the thread and don't go back to it. Unless it's something that falls into an area against the terms and conditions of the site, I don't think it would be something that people shouldn't be able to write on here.

This in general is a very personal site, I don't really think that TMI fits very often at all on this site because it's what is expected and no one is forced to read anything that they don't want to.

I completely second this.

I love EF for the very reason of coming here and being able to openly discuss something that would make people blush, gasp, and possibly faint when mentioned IRL. Here I'm able to find people who will maturely discuss back with me on the issues that everyone's thinking but no one says out loud. If something comes up you don't like, it's easy to move on to another thread or to leave the forum all together.

Of course, if it's inappropriate in the way of hate speech, soliciting, or flaming a user, in that case it grates my nerves. But I've almost never seen this. In fact, I can only think of one right now and it was handled very promptly and maturely by the staff.

So all in all, I LOVE EF and the community therein.

I agree. It's a sex site and sex is very personal, some facets of it more so than others, depending on your personal perspective.

I have not come across any subjects that I found were too personal. The things I would not appreciate seeing on eden aren't allowed anyways so I have not come across them.

It's hard to respond to you without an example. I'm not sure if you are talking about sexual, social, personal, etc things.

You can simply choose to not enter certain topics etc.

I love that people feel comfortable to discuss things like sexual issues, etc. This community wouldn't be as great if we were censored in those things.

I've just recently found this community and I think the topics are insightful. I feel like I'm learning so much in my desire that finding a place with others on their own sexual quests is cool. I haven't found anything to offend me because I'm fairly open to anybody can and will like different things but there's been a few things that invoked the wtf or is that even 'doable' thoughts lol But when they post clear titles it helps to decide if ya click into the thread or not.

It's surprisingly pleasant to see so many different people discussing such intimacies with encouragement and knowledge.

The only thing that bugs me here is that I've run forums for a long time and I want to moderate duplicate threads in multiple sections lol. It's a large forum with a lot of sections but it would help if peeps searched the whole forum for the right place to put stuff.

I have to agree with you Lauren. I love this site because I can be myself and say what I really feel without being told I am to frank and honest. For crims sake I was 32 years old discussing cleaning my horse's sheath with other horse people, some of whom were BREEDERS. I was told I was too sexual when I used the proper clinical terms for the body parts...we were discussing in a round table type discussion about products FOR this chore. I figured I was amoung adults but apparently because my Mother was there I should call it peepee instead of penis. *eye rolls*
I have always answered a question as fully as I can, and I really love that I can do that here and be part of the conversation not cause that unpleasant quiet moment.

The way I look at it, many of the people on Eden have low inhibitions. It's the reason so many of us not only love sex so much, but feel free to talk about certain aspects of it in an open atmosphere.

Yes, the internet provides anonymity, but I've seen a few of the other posters here elsewhere, and they've seen me, and we're the same where ever we go.

I think as a adult one needs to constantly work on one's self. I know I used to (and I'm still working on it) get "offended" really easily. I consider myself politically Progressive and I at one time considered myself a strong feminist and I would almost go out of my way to get offended by certain things. But,I've been working on becoming less offend-able, after learning that a LOT of it is controllable and often, being offended is a choice.

That doesn't mean nothing should be offensive, though. Eden makes is clear that certain non-consensual acts are off limits for discussion (children, animals etc) and that is only common sense. The Expectations for Conduct makes these things clear. We are all expected to read the Expectations and abide by them in order to have posting privileges.

But, of course, there have been a few threads I am simply not interested in, or simply don't want to answer, or I don't feel anyone really needs to know. Other people may enjoy the few subjects I don't care to discuss, and they are free to. I don't get offended by the few things that I don't engage in, though.

I think Eden makes it clear that this is a Sex Positive Site, and one has to be a certain age to post here. I think this place is pretty tolerant and in order to be tolerant one has to "tolerate" things even that one may not engage in or enjoy oneself, because other people may well really enjoy those activities.

I honestly think that you even saying this about other people is offensive. This is an adult site - you should be open-minded to people's topics that they discuss. I would never sugarcoat or childproof my speech since this IS an adult-based site. Since you've been ignoring the things that you don't like, I suggest continuing to do so. But truly, it shouldn't even be as big of a problem as you are making it.

I also feel that a better thing to do would be to confront the person and tell them that you felt this way, rather than being passive aggressive and skirting around the issue. Be open and honest, and you will have an easier time dealing with it being offensive.

When I read the initial post I was wondering if it was whether I am just so open-mined about sex and sexuality or if it's just because I am an adult that nothing seems to phase me on here. I think it mostly stems from column a because I have known a lot of adults who are easily offended. I guess like attracts like and that is why we are all here on this site, at least the majority from what I am reading in this thread. I am really glad to be here where it's ok to discuss otherwise "taboo" subjects in certain social situations because sometimes I have some pretty odd questions!

Best adivce is definitely: If ya don't like it, stop reading or don't click on the thread in the first place...

Yes, I agree with you and I see where you're coming from. I'll try to do that. Also after a lot of answers that I received on this post I realized my mistake and understand more clearly these concepts.

There is a certain culture shock when you find an environment where the norms are vastly different from the social mores with which you live in the outside world. It's normal to feel uncomfortable at first, I think.
