Is this a new field? I just noticed it. How is the expert decided?

The "expert" is the person who did the initial review. This really only applies to toys new to the site that are sent out for review and get reviewed before hitting the site.

Weird, I saw an admin reply here earlier, and now it's gone....

If I interpret their reply correctly, the 'expert' is just the person who has the highest rated review at the moment. It's only on the description project items, at the moment (I went back and checked one of my older toy reviews, *cough*). I assume it'll be site wide, one day....

My understanding matches what Bulma said.
Eden Fantasys has started a program where they send a new toy out to a selected reviewer before the toy is "live" on the site. That reviewer provides a review of the toy with a special bend toward making the review descriptive and the summary of the review is used as the description of the toy with a link to the reviewer's page describing them as an expert. Those participating in the program have been invited to do so and I suppose some one at Eden Fantasys had to feel that they were an expert before the invitation was made.

I'm actually in the description project, but there really was an admin reply here, and I'm not exactly sure what happened to it. I was never told I'd be upgraded to 'expert class', just given a really interesting assignment. My interpretation of the admin's words, the reply that was on this thread that vanished, was that it was merely the highest rated review, and there was mention of the number of votes a review had influenced the ranking.

I have to think that the admin reply here that has disappeared did so because the information was incorrect or there was a misunderstanding. I think an example of what the original thread starter was talking about can be found here:
link
This lists you (Spiking Glue) as an expert and uses the summary of your review as the description of the product. This program has been expanded to include many reviewers (26 to this point by my count) and only applies to brand new toys that Eden Fantasys made part of the program. If I am incorrect about any of this, I hope that some one will correct my misinformation.

I would agree with Jimbo Jones on why it was probably removed so quickly...bad/wrong info or a misunderstanding. What you just described here is how the order of reviews are determined and shown on the product page when you click on the "reviews" tab, which my understanding says has nothing to do with the "expert" on the "description" tab. The reviews on a toy are sorted from highest ranked to lowest ranked, and I'm thinking the admin just misunderstood the question.
