when does this start? Will the ranking take in all the contributors activity for the past year or start effective today?

All activities for the last year are considered in the activity factor.
For popularity factor we consider all data for all years.

Yeah, I just flew up to 5.6. I was like, "OMG, WTF BBQ SAUCE?! WHAT DID I DO RIGHT?"

So this means Dame Demi is a 10 and sets the curve, right? ^_~

No, Dame Demi is not 10, although she is close at 9.7

Rank 10 is an ideal contributor rank who has reached the maximums values in all parameters we measure. No one has reached 10 yet.

You should not compare your previous rank and new rank because it is two different rank calculation models. Please monitor your rank starting from today and you will see if you are doing it right

This is really awesome. I especially appreciate the inclusion of forum activity in both ranks.

Yay! I'm guessing this means we'll all see a lot more up and down movement. That's awesome. Thanks for letting us know how the new format is set up!

Wow, glad to see the changes in effect. I think the numbers being higher will boost confidence in the reviewer community as well, at least where shoppers are concerned. It really wouldn't be as impressive if everyone was below 4. There are some really awesome reviewers up in numbers that are more reflecting of their contributions now. Hope it all works out, and it looks great so far! I think most people will be happy with the setup. I too am happy about the forum activity being counted, as I'm hoping more people will check the forums more often. Besides, it's just a cool place

Thanks for all the hard work guys, and YAY!!!

My brain was stirring on part of the popularity aspect. 34% on average review usefulness. Do you have any checks to keep people from voting on their own reviews? (Forgive me- it's my former life as a CPA popping up...)

Yes, we are aware of this practice, even respectable contributors sometimes vote for themselves. We are trying to eliminate this in the contributor rank. Soon we will introduce new rank filters which will decrease rank if we identify any inappropriate practice.

In all fairness, it's a little hard not to bump your review up a notch when people needlessly voted "not useful at all," thinking that they were voting on the toy rather than the review. I know that sounds stuck-up, but I don't think I've ever written a review I would consider less than "somewhat useful," and while I understand some voters' confusion, it really unbalances things.

I would suggest we make it so only logged-in members can vote on review usefulness, but that seems a bit strict.

It was actually suggested by a respectable contributor that you SHOULD do that. I knew I had read it somewhere so I dug up the forum. link

Yeah, I've done this. When I wrote my review on the Impulse Diva Teaser ( link ), a few days after I left the front page, someone commented 3 times. I got the alerts, felt that happy little thrill you get when someone takes the time to comment... and saw that the same person had commented 3 times, and then voted 'not useful at all', when all my other votes had been 'extremely useful'. It sounded like the commentor had a real beef with the product, and felt I was stupid for reviewing it? (even though it was a description project assignment)? I don't know. I did actually vote for myself at that time. I've voted for myself in the past, too.

It was actually *recommended* in another post, that you vote for yourself, by Essen' Em, as a method for helping you raise your rating. I thought that was what people simply did. I didn't do it often, but I never thought anything of it, when I did. I actually voted myself as *less* useful than the majority vote, a couple times. Heh.

I vote for my reviews when they are new, once. I don't do it every time, but more often then not. I think most everyone does this as most reviews have a vote when they show up in the recent reviews section. It would be nice if there was someway to let every one only vote for each review once, then after that only show the results. Many sites do this with polls, or they let you vote as many times as you want but only the first vote counts.

I've heard that comments for negative votes will be made mandatory, and I'm hoping to see that. Even if someone votes negative for the reviews, at least then maybe they would say why. I don't care if people vote my reviews poorly, as long as they are doing it for legitimate reasons. Not agreeing with how I rank a toy, or voting based off of personal feelings towards me are not reasons that I feel are legitimate. If someone thinks my review is not helpful, or I forgot an important detail then they have every reason to rate my review low.

Is it wrong to vote for your own reviews once? I never saw anything wrong with getting one vote myself, but if it's deemed cheating, I'll never do it again.

I also vote once.

I'm not sure how I would feel about mandatory comments. I think most of the times I vote reviews down is when they are poorly written and I'm not sure "I don't understand what you're even trying to say" is going to help some people.

We consider voting on own reviews as inappropriate practice. The reviews should be evaluated by other people not by author of the review.

Hn, I wish I'd known this. I thought, since it was advised on the forum that you do this to hep ranking (there was a time I thought ty try and raise mine), and no one said not to, that it was fine. Welp, that's that.

How does this go for voting on the reviews of friends? Conflict of interest? Just curious. Rules like these maybe should have been stated somewhere to keep this from happening, as it's obvious many people did not even know it was wrong. I understand of course that voting multiple times isn't ethical, but I never considered voting once as unethical...now that I know and it's been stated by a staff member, I won't do it at all anymore. I do feel that implementing something to prevent it though would be helpful, that and having the rules posted in an easy to find place. This forum should help though...just wish it would have been stated sooner...
