Anal and Hemorrhoids

I know that sometimes stressing the anus too much- whether from stretching it without enough preparation, to pushing too much with the anal muscles can cause small precursors to hemorrhoids. Not even big ones, just a little bump and such.

I am wondering if there are ways to prevent this other than "don't push when defecating- wait till you've REALLY gotta go", and "don't stick anything up there for a while".

How long is the average healing-time for a non-painful hemorrhoid that only shows when 'pushing'? Is it usually a problem that will heal but then start up again more easily because you've had it in the past?

My wife has the same problem so we don't do anal that often I'd be interested in knowing if anyone else has found a good solution too.
