Do you like chewing gum? Do you like anal sex? Yes, the goofiest poll EVER, I think, but based on "real" science!!!

Okay, here's the scoop. I am at a party where I meet up with an old friend. He is an epidemiologist (group disease expert) and statistician. He took part in a multi center, university based study going to be called "Lifestyle and Behavioral Survey of the 18 to 30 Year Old Demographic". In short, it was a large study of what this age group drives, eats, thinks, does, listens to...etc, etc, etc. It is designed to predict factors that can be watched for future health issues, advertising, and all kinds of things. The survey dealt with a host of health and exercise issues, including sexual issues.

He is not sure how or when results will be published, as they are still crunching data and collecting numbers.

Now, in any statisitical survey, funny things can "drop out" or "associate randomly". For instance, most folks have sex at night. Pregnancy thus happens at night. Stars are out at night, so you COULD find and create a mathematical model claiming there is an association between starlight and pregnancy happening. See the point?

Well, this is probably one of those "funny, unrelated data points", but he was laughing his butt off (pun intended), telling us that it seemed those people in the demographic who "enjoyed or participated in anal sex on a regular basis", also fell under the heading of "enjoyed or chewed gum on a regular basis". (You would THINK that the GUM chewers would be the "enjoyed ORAL sex on a regular basis...but ANAL?).

So...was this JUST a statisical GLITCH or an AMAZING revelation ??? Let's find out.

Chewing gum is a repetitive behavior that provides constant stimulation and sensory feedback. Some people (disregarding ADD) prefer more intense or consistent stimulation than others. It's not surprising that the two would be highly correlated. Other forms of more constant or intense sensory stimulation could be highly correlated too: spicy food, rock climbing, etc.

All good points, now that you mention it. Might not be "unrelated" after all.

Neither my wife nor I chew gum, I like anal, she hasn't but has been experimenting lately.

Gunsmoke, we aren't in the stated age group, maybe that's why we don't fit.

My wife and I both liked gum when we were younger and didn't have so much dental work that gum can undo, but back then neither of us would have considered anal.

Go figure!

Actually I've never had anal sex so I'm not sure if I like it. And I don't chew gum because there aren't enough kinds without artificial sweeteners.

This is hilarious. People conflating correlation with causation is a huge pet peeve of mine. Drives me crazy. So does chewing gum for that matter. All that chewing effort for no reward. Blah.

But! I do like anal sex, so perhaps I am not quite as prematurely curmudgeony as I sound in the first paragraph. I don't hate everything! Just gum and people who don't understand basic statistical principles!

However, I do like anal sex!

But correlation is usually the start of a study to prove causation, provided that there is one.

The other big thing to keep in mind is sample, which can make a big difference, especially here, where the sample is anything but random.

Like the 'causal effect' that showed that women get cold when dunked in a river. Women have painful menstrual cramps. Therefore women who get dunked in a cold river will have painful menstrual cramps. Ergo; women should never swim in cold water....
My Grandmother passed this bit of 1950s 'scientific' research on to me and I just nodded, roled my eyes and thanked her.

Seems like he didnt poll enough people. Or its possible the demographic of the users are on this forum might be skewed. I would think in comparison to the avg population ef would have more people that like anal.
