I have a few times. The 1st time I used lube & didn't get the warmth, even after re-peeling the ginger, or maybe it was an old ginger root.
The last time I did it (both solo) I did get the heat sensation. Not unbearable, but I'd take it out after 5 minutes & immediately the heat sensation subsided. If bound I would have been able to tolerate it a lot longer. Squeezing the root would cause the temperature to rise.

Figging? I read this as "Flogging". No, I've never heard of figging. What is that?

I've done it solo a number of times. The burning sensation is pretty exhilaration. I never felt like it was too much, in fact I would say each attempt was underwhelming, but it still feels pretty good.

A thing to try is scoring the root, cutting not too deep lines into it after peeling, this releases more juices. Aging a root is also suppose to make it stronger, but I've personally never had luck with that.

It is actually using a ginger root as an anal dildo...apparently it has a warm to burning sensation. Seems more like S&M anal play to me!!! It dates back a couple hundred years, at least. Very odd to me.
