Depending on how each of you is built some positions will work better than others, including some being a bit painful. That happens to me occasionally with certain dildos/configurations - just mark it down as a position that doesn't work and try something different.

I used to have vaginal and abdominal pain during rear entry sex, (not anal, just rear entry PIV sex.) It turned out I had several endometrial implants, (growths of endometrial tissue which are not inside the uterus) from a condition called endometriosis and when the growths were removed during a surgical procedure (it was not at all bad as surgical procedures go, I was home by dinner time) the pain went away.
Endometriosis can also be a cause of internal pain from anal sex. (When I had endomentrosis, my husband and I were not yet having anal sex, so I don't know if there would have been pain.) Endometrial implants and adhesions can form on the outside of the rectum and lower bowel, as well as parts of the uterus and other organs where referred pain can occur causing pain when certain parts of the body have pressure on them.
Endometriosis can also be a cause of internal pain from anal sex. (When I had endomentrosis, my husband and I were not yet having anal sex, so I don't know if there would have been pain.) It isn't "painful", per se, but definitely feels less comfortable than other positions. Same with vaginal sex. I like being on top for anal, because it allows me to control penetration. Maybe this would work for you as well?

When I do like anal, I am always on top and we can finish that way, otherwise we end up stopping and switching back to vaginal
