#1 thing - foreplay. Get excited, enjoy an anal massage, and start with some small toys or fingers (stop playing with your penis during and immediately after insertion, as you will tend to tighten up with genital stimulation). It's not all sexual, either - you need to be relaxed and comfortable. Make sure the room is warm and there are soft bits (pads, folded towels, whatever) wherever they need to be based on your positions. Choose a position that allows you to relax.

If you're worried about mess then you're less likely to be able to relax. There are a few different approaches. One thing you can do is wait a couple of hours after eating (an early dinner is a good plan for pegging/anal nights), go to the bathroom and "try", then use a dildo or finger to check things out and make sure there's not going to be a problem (there probably won't be). Be sure to use lube and go slow enough to make it comfortable rather than rushing and causing pain. Pain is the enemy of a comfortable anal experience, because you will then tend to tighten up as a defense.

If you do want to try an anal douche (really a small enema) then by all means go ahead. They're still figuring things out, but the preponderance of evidence points to small enemas (1 cup of liquid or under) of warm water or isotonic saline (add a pinch of salt and baking soda to the cup) being fairly innocuous, and they do ensure that you are clean. Just do them over an hour before you start play so things can settle down. If you go this route either get a Fleet-type enema from the drugstore and empty the contents out (replace it with water - the solution that they come with will cause problems) or get a squeeze-type enema syringe bulb from the drugstore or mail-order. Give yourself two and things should be pretty clean.

My wife and i made the mistake of using the enema off the shelf. It got her cleaned out alright but we couldnt really do anything. Lesson learned.

Yep, any commercial laxative* will leave your guts too worked up to play for quite a while. Not to mention they're often much more unpleasant.

*the one exception might be glycerin suppositories. For many people these are pretty gentle, though they are more of a laxative than a small water or isotonic enema is. I recommend not using anything if you can get away with it and feel comfortable, and using water/isotonic saline if possible, but if I was "messy," in a place where an enema wasn't an option, and my wife offered me anal I'd sure use a glycerin suppository or two.

i have been using a shower based system for years now. leaves me feeling clean and even adds to my natural lubrication because whatever is in there is enhanced by water.

just use low-medium pressure.

Careful what you eat that day. I try to avoid nuts and corn if you get my gist...

Stick to liquids all day and you'll be fine.

Shower-based setups are for advanced people. It's too easy to get the water too hot or to get too much water injected. I can see why someone doing something such as fisting would want one, but for rectal-level anal play, two clean-out squirts with a bulb is pretty fast. It seems like it would be faster than setting up a shower system and adjusting the water.

I feel that the shower is cleaner overall, bulbs scare me because I like to push back and I worry ALOT about making a mess.

over the years I have learned the subtle details of the shower enema and am done in (on average) under 10 minutes. normally less.

I recommend this for the beginner because a great tool for the anal adventurer, and is super portable. (I want one, but i have found i can make do with a good hand held shower system)

StreemMaster makes nice products, but until you learn to "feel" how far the water is going in it might be good to fill the bottom part of the funnel and then turn off the shower. Getting too much water in adds to the difficulty - it takes much longer to all come out, and sometimes it brings more stuff down.

Just as a reminder - I still recommend checking first with fingers or a dildo. If you don't need to mess with enemas then why take them?
