I'd try with something small like the Bootie by Fun Factory, inserted anally during other play, but if you don't love that don't give up, I prefer something trusted internally as opposed to a plug just sitting there so you could try a probe as well (I don't have any specific recommendations but you want something firm enough to insert but not so firm that it will hurt, silicon is good, plus it's also very clean). Most importantly use lots of lube and take your time.

We started with perinial massage - then external anal massage. Then a well lubricated finger - then on to finger sized vibes. The small vibes tend to penetrate easier than a finger and the vibes are a nice touch.
Realizing that comfortable anal sex would require learning how to be comfortable with larger opening - we tried a couple of tapered plugs and vibes that more or less train you to relax as your sphincters (there are two) dilate. Once she could handle a 1.5" but plug, we were able to comfortably engage in anal sex. If your partner is large - it could take more.
Just don't go too quickly - and remember to reapply lube as required.
