Lots of lube and slowness is how you avoid injury when doing anal. I'm not sure what you mean when you say "doing anal backwards" though.

If you are talking about penetration from behind in the doggie position - it's just like any other position. Use plenty of lube, go slowly and if your partner is new to anal penetration allow them to control the rate and depth of penetration. This is one of the great advantages of doggie style - without body weight restrictions there is maximum freedom of movement for both partners.
