Sex headaches

Contributor: northstar northstar
I know headaches are a clichéd excuse for avoiding sex, but I seem to get them sometimes when I'm building up to an orgasm, or on the verge. It generally only happens if I don't actually orgasm (i.e during stimulation with the OH without using a vibrator), so I'm wondering if it's caused by a big buildup of endorphines/hormones, without the end release.

Has anyone else experienced this?

I have never experienced it and I've never heard of it. How often does this happen?

My headaches usually go away from have sex. Unless its a migraine, in that case I can't even take off my clothes. :/

Are you holding your breath a lot during the build up? The head rush / headache thing happens to me when I hold my breath without thinking.

I get them during sex sometimes too. I think it's a combination of holding my breath and muscles getting a work out.

I've never heard of having a headache near an orgasm either! That is sort of strange.

I would say go to the doctor for a check-up. It may be caused by elevated blood pressure, which generally rises during sexual activity.

I'm the same way. My headaches WILL go away if i have sex, but if i'm having a migraine i can't do anything when the throbbing is THAT bad...

I get headaches sometimes when having sex if I'm holding my jaw all tensed up a certain way. It's really hard to stop doing it even once I catch myself.

I'll sometimes get a headache after a SUPER intense orgasm too, although that's a completely different kind of headache. It's pretty rare, though.

Sex can cause and cure headaches. I am very glad I came across this post, because it sounds familiar to me. The changes in hormones can lead to headaches (thus even arousal can cause them). I don't believe anyone has pointed this out yet, but hormonal headaches can actually be migraines and not be diagnosed as such. If you continue to get them try taking something ahead of time like excedrin migraine or just your go to over the counter med. If you get these regularly with "fun" and you get headaches with your period I would definitely recommend having a talk with a doctor.

The same happens to my husband. He always holds his breath right before orgasm.
