Which is better, a semi useful strap on or a traditional dildo and handwork?

After not being able to find the perfect strap on, I think I'm just going to use the dildo on my partner myself instead of trying to fumble with something that is too big.

Finding a good harness can be hard, but when you do you have the advantage of having two free hands to play around with as well.
The downside of strap-on play is that hand-held play offers a bit more in the way of options, such as directing the dildo, rotating while thrusting, etc.
In short I think the best way is to have both available and choose based on what you want at that time. Perhaps even move back and forth during a session.

So far my experience is with manual - but if my girl decided to get a harness for pegging - we'd get a good one - not 'semi-useful' - that's why we read the product reviews!

That is a good reason to pull out the sewing machine if you have one or enlist a trusted friend to help you make a harness. If you are looking to make it easy to go hands free it is worth the time to get things right and then you can have the best of both worlds.

My boyfriend and I have a Feeldoe (a strapless strap-on dildo) but sometimes I just am too wet or tired to hold it in properly. But right now we can't afford a harness, even a crappy one. This is where I would suggest to you exactly what we do: our traditional dildo works wonders with Shibari. (That's Japanese rope art.) If you're not familiar with it, it's not only for bondage. We use it to make a strap-on harness for me so our dildos always fit all the time. I'd never buy a harness now. A strap-on to really work has to be comfortable and useful or it is more of a distraction then pleasurable.

Actually, I think your hands are the best if you're comparing to non-vibrating toys. If you're talking about vibrating toys, I say it's a toss-up between the two depending on what you want: simulating male penetration or working in the non-toy holding hand as well. Try both depending on your mood.

Go to a store like Toys In Babeland and get fitted for a quality harness. Hands on dildo play is a great deal of fun, but there is something quite different, in terms of stimulation and psychological experience, about strapon play.
