Are all these "girl attractant" deoderants, and sprays (like Ax), the ultimate myth?

Contributor: Bignuf Bignuf
People pay big money for this stuff. If it smells, and feels nice, great. But do people really believe the hype? Do guys really believe the myth that woman are going to "swoon" over them if they are wearing this stuff?

What do you think?

I thought Axe was a biological weapon marketed as body spray?

I think they are in the scientific sense. Nothing unattractive about smelling nice but it won't make a relationship.

I've never really gotten the urge to swoon over guys who wear stuff like Axe or Old Spice. It smells nice, but so does Yankee Candle, and the latter is probably far less douche-y about it.

That being said, I do LOVE when my boyfriend smells good. There's already that initial attraction there and I don't care if he wears Axe or not, it just makes cuddling a bit nicer.

My girlfriend uses Axe body wash and holy hell, I usually can't stop smelling her. It turns me on, most definitely. I don't think it's a sexual attractant to everyone and definitely not every scent is attractive to me. However, there are times after smelling it on my girlfriend that I want to jump her bones while she's still bathing in it.

If wearing the smell increases confidence, and confidence leads to being considered more attractive.... then yes, they work

I think many (but not most) men DO think Axe will make themselves more attractive, especially the "pheromone infused" ones. I just like a guy that smells good, whether it be cologne, a nice body spray, or just someone who showers daily. I think some Axe scents smell good, but most are really gross when used in excess.

I'd rather a man wear a good cologne than Axe or something like it. Its overpowering and I can't stand the way it smells. Smelling nice will always be a plus but it isn't necessarily a turn on.

I use Axe deodorant, shower gel, and shampoo.

Sometimes the spray.

I feel like I've gotten more attention since, but that may also have to do with having better looks and more confidence now. I don't wear it as the ultimate smell-good thing, but partly out of pressure to seem masculine and I don't think it smells bad either

I don't think it's significantly different from the perfume that women wear. I've been asked if I'm turned on by one perfume or another by several Ex's. To be honest, I have yet to smell a woman's perfume that I actually like. With most it's a struggle for me to pretend to tolerate it.
At a previous employer, one woman who occupied a cube next to mine seemed to think that her perfume was "sexy". I told her that it gave me a headache and to please not use so much of it. She was nearly indignant... LOL!

For myself I use the perfume free deodorant antiperspirant and only occasionally a cologne that I do like but I asked my GF if she found it acceptable before I bought it.

I almost feel like it's a placebo effect. Commercials show girls loving the stuff. Guy believes that girls like the smell, therefore he acts more confident. Now girls are attracted to him, but it's his new found confidence that's attracting people, not the smell.

Personally, I really dislike colognes and most artificial scents. Even in moderation, they give me headaches and make me sneeze.

Pretty much. Every girl I know hates the smell of it.

My husband wears Old Spice deodorant and varies between Old Spice and Axe body wash. I love it. He smells so good. I tend to pick it out, when I'm doing the shopping.

I'd have to agree with Chilipepper on this one - biological weapons. Most of them are full of toxic chemicals and are terrible things to put on your body. Most the AXE products smell like crap anyway. The commercials should have women gagging and barfing rather than swooning.

The Environmental Working Group has a wonderful database of the safety of products and ingredients: link

*high five!* Gagging and barfing, haha! So true!

I've yet to come across a cologne that I think actually smells good. So far they've all smelled pretty similar: too strong and nothing very pleasant about them. I dislike Axe in particular because my brother used it all the time before he moved out - if I took my shower too soon after his, I could still smell the stuff in the air. Ugh!

Yeah, it's especially difficult to be attracted to someone who smells like your brother. (Your brother marinates in the stuff like mine does? My sympathies.)

I don't know if he still uses it, or at least if he uses it as much as he used to. He once told me that his girlfriend (now wife) really liked it. Much as I like her, there's times when I question her taste.

It's just a marketing thing. I mean it smells good but I won't go crazy over it.

I don't like Ax, but that's probably because those ads started when I was in school and all the boys took them to heart. It smelled like they bathed in the stuff, ugh.

i don't like the cheap drug store shelf sprays ... they do nothing for me, the smell is too strong and not even a good smell. i like a long lasting, modest, cologne. the kind that draws you in: chanel bleu, gucci pour homme ii, dg blue ... that's what i like

Heh I hope most guys are more level headed than to take those commercials seriously! Personally I find them cheesy (as well as the Old Spice Ones) and I roll my eyes a bit if I notice one of my male friends has something of Axe Brand in their room, because I wonder if they do believe the hype.
If it smells nice that's fine but you don't buy it BECAUSE of the commercials. But those companies should rethink their marketing strategy in my opinion.

But I agree the only way it 'works' is like any body product is supposed to work. It smells nice (to those who think so) so it may make your girl cuddle up to you more or make an admirer more interested, and think more positively of you, but that's it. It's not magic or anything.

Personally, I like a guy in just basic deodorant. I don't want their natural scent masked too much. Plus, with body sprays at least it's easy to put on too much.

Yeah, a lot of guys over do that stuff. They are strong scents.

the human brain does not detect pheromones. our smell receptors are not sensitive enough. it's a lie.

The jury's still out on it, from what I understand. It's been a while since I've researched the topic, but apparently there have been studies that suggested pheromones do play a role in human life. How strong that role is is still up for debate, it could very well be quite minor (and I honestly think that a lot of pheromone products are a complete crock).

I have had a man walk by that smelled good and ive turned to sniff the air and look to see who it was that smelled good and i will even ask them what they are wearing but i have never lunged at a guy an grabbed on and stroked his hair cause it smelled good or attached myself to him cause he was clean and good smelling. And ive enver once smelled Axe and thought oh yeah that smells good, to me it smells like bad puberty haha. I think its great for younger generations, but not for a grown man trying to be taken seriously.

While I was waiting at the deli counter in Safeway's yesterday, two guys walked up and waited for their turn, the scent wafting from one of them was so overpowering, I had to cover my poor nose...go figure!

That brings up a good point Rossie Lady...

Products are only supposed to be one or to squirts, not something a person bathes in.

No matter how nice a product smells, there is no way in hell I walk near a person who seems to bath and wash their clothes in it.
