Cleopatra and the world's first vibrator

Contributor: voenne voenne
I've started looking into this to see if it's actual fact, but it's "believed" that Cleopatra invented the world's first vibrator.

It was a jar full of buzzing bees.

Anyone know any more on the subject?

I think it's pretty awesome, even though it's a little scary thinking about having bees up inside you. Cleopatra surely had the best beauty secrets, though!

I've definitely heard that. Not sure whether it's true of course, but it sure as hell is interesting! I wonder what she'd think of all our crazy stories about her XD

Considering she was a stateswoman who enjoyed motherhood and a good game of letrunculi(sp?) as well as did her damnedest to keep a dying nation alive, I don't put much stock in the sex myths thought up by her detractors.

Sure it wasn't Caligula who came up with the buzzy jar?

I wonder this, as well. Hehe.

I honestly have no clue. Like I said, I haven't found any actual facts. It's just an interesting concept, and I suppose we'll never know if it's actually true. Just fun to think about.

I've heard that too, as well as that she loved sex. Wouldn't it be incredible to me able to ask her? Not sure if it's true, but we know the Egyptians had all sorts of interesting ideas for sex.

Personally, I think the whole Victorians inventing the first vibrator (as a treatment for hysteria believe it or not) is a bit more plausible and easier to find information on.

... I just about fainted at the idea of using bees like that. Apiphobia, y'know.

Sounds a bit fishy, but it's kind of fun (if scary) to imagine stuff like that. I have to wonder how effective that would be, though: how strong would the vibration be (no pun intended)? And you'd have to make sure there was some way for fresh air to enter the jar or the bees would rapidly suffocate and you'd have a much more literal version of a "dead" vibrator.

Not confident to say it's true, either, but it's really fascinating what they came up with in ancient times. I know ancient Greece was big on treating hysteria through masturbation and orgasm, too.

Had no clue about the Victorians in relation to the subject. I'll look it up, too.

Haha, I know. I'd freak out about the bees, too. You're right that they'd probably have had to have some sort of way for the bees to breathe... (Also, funny "dead vibrator" comment).

Fun fact time!

This is thought to be the world's oldest dildo, and we've been making them ever since. And indeed, the ancient Greeks had dildos made of wood and leather, often using olive oil as lube.

And there's actually a movie about the world's first vibrator. I'm seeing it the first opportunity I get! Vibrators, humorously, were also the fifth electric appliance to be made available for retail sale.

Wow, that's really cool to know! Thank you for sharing!

Haha, I hadn't even heard of this movie. It looks hilarious, I want to watch it.

I knew about the Victorians and vibrators, but not this theory, and the Greeks and Romans were pretty big (no pun intended) fans of dildos.

Sounds a bit far fetched. The beautiful and irresistible sex godess queen of the Nile Cleopatra really didn't exist. She was a shrewd ruler that was later reduced to a simple icon of beauty. Her beauty has never been confirmed.

Caligula sounds like the more plausible one to have come up with this, but who knows? None of us were there, despite all our reading and findings on the matter.

You're right, we'll never know the actual truth. Cleopatra was the first I'd heard of it, so that's why I mentioned her, but am definitely not going off of just that. It's just a fascinating idea!

Yes, you are right about that. But even though her supposed beauty was never confirmed, it does not mean that it never existed, either. We'll never know for sure, but that is okay.

I hadn't heard that. Although, as previously stated, I did know the first dildos were created to cure hysteria.

Its an interesting concept, but I think sustaining power may have been difficult...
