Discrimination

Contributor: Lock Lock
Have you ever experienced discrimination, denial (denying it's real), exclusion, or disbelief (there's no such thing as ______!) due to being bisexual, pansexual, etc?

Did it mostly come from heterosexual people?

Discrimination isn't limited to straight people; I've experienced more exclusion from right here inside our rainbow community than from outside of it, to be honest.

Oops. I'm not bisexual, though. Sorry for skewing your thread!

I've gotten it all. My favorite comes from my own mother "if you like both then why not just choose men and just choose not to like women." Right..... Cause we purposely choose who we love and are attracted too. *eyeroll*

I have heard " You need to pick men or women " or " you are just in a phase" I have heard this from straight and gay men.

I've heard there's no such thing as bisexuality from both homo- and hetero-sexual people. It's ridiculous.

Among the people I am "out" to, I have only experienced mild discrimination from a gay male friend, who called me things like butch (even though I consider myself fairly feminine) somewhat jokingly but it was also hurtful.

Among people I am not out to, I have been discriminated against just for supporting same-sex marriage (so that doesn't encourage me to come out 100% ). That comes from heterosexual people. I have heard people who didn't know I am bisexual talking about how bisexuality isn't real, it's just for attention etc. That comes from heterosexuals and homosexuals alike. Whether they are straight or gay, they still only understand being attracted to a single gender, so I feel like they are equally likely to not understand bisexuality.

I have been dismissed, told I don't exist, told I'm a poser, told I should just choose one gender and only like one, all that kind of crap. I've gotten flak from people of different orientations, but pretty much only monosexuals, be they gay or straight.

I recently had a conversation with a gay friend of mine that said he used to not believe "bi" existed, until he met me. We're very close so he sees how my husband and I interact and he's friends with our on again off again girlfriend and sees now that it is what it is. And everyone is different!

I have experienced discrimination... but honestly, it's been from other LGBT members. Some heterosexuals have said it isn't a real thing or that I'm greedy. My own dad said he thought being straight or gay was a lifestyle, but being "bisexual" was an "activity".
