better side bar titles

(This really belongs in a general LGBT category, but since I had to choose one...)

A few months ago, in the "Hey" thread, the side bar designations (sex toys for women, men, couples, lesbian sex toys, gay sex toys) on edenfantasys got brought up. This had actually been a concern of mine for awhile, since it not only makes very little sense to call a hunk of silicone "gay" or "straight," but also fails to capture the diversity of sexual options. Yeah, there are sex toys specifically designed for prostate stimulation, but those same toys work really well for g-spot stimulation too. And the "lesbian sex toys" category encompasses toys that are used by trans men, who may have female parts but often don't identify as lesbians. The problem I had was figuring out what alternative sidebar designations would be both clearly indicative of what the contents were and less problematic.
My thoughts so far:
Toys for Male Bodies/Toys for Female Bodies/Female-Female partner play/Male-Male partner play/Female-Male partner play
...but those are pretty cumbersome, and aren't all that perfect for trans folks anyways.

A friend also suggested leaving the ones we have, but just shifting the section of designations that is currently below (vibrators, dildos, etc.) to be first, and more prominent, since that describes the toys rather than the person using them.

What do you guys think? Any ideas?

I think the classifications should be based on the toy's function (vibrator, dildo, anal, etc.) and then having a link to the nifty new Sexis guides such as "toys for female bodies", "toys for lesbians", etc. I really hate the current categories.

We have been revising these over the last few months and the new versions will be going live soon. Instead of simply changing text, we have re-thought some of our categories a bit. In my experience, discussion about gender based categories and gender play categories have been on the table since I started this job 4 months ago - it has been a matter of consultation, rewording, design, and programming. I thought it would be an easy fix too but I learned otherwise once I found out all the technical aspects to making these changes. We definitely want to be as inclusive as we can. My boss and I discuss feedback from the community daily and your thoughts are heard. I wish we could have done this sooner and I assure you that the changes have been underway.

Most trans people do not like being referred to as "female-bodied" or "male-bodied." Just using the term trans- or gender play is good enough, honestly. Because transmen and transwomen know what they need, as do straight or homosexual people. They don't need specific sections, they just need a wider range.

Really, I agree with you. Anyone can use any type of toy for any purpose, so labeling them for any specific purpose isn't true to the multi-purpose of many of the toys that Edenfantasys has. I'm not sure about changing the sections though, because that's difficult to be all-encompassing and sales might be affected by it, since people would generally go to what they need, not to other sections.

I don't know if this was where you were going with your thoughts but it's what came to mind when I read it. Lately, I've found myself wishing toys might be in several categories or maybe be able to be "tagged" with several usage suggestions. For instance, I think the Rock chick is listed as a G-spot toy but being a dual stimulator, it's also a clitoral toy. Or the Bloomy which is anal plug and dildo. Sometimes I feel the "suggested uses" are sometimes limited.

I definitely agree with that. Honestly, any toy could be used for any purpose, if you feel like it. I believe that suggested uses are only there, though, for people who are new to using toys or who need the extra jolt to get them in gear and thinking about how to use them.

I disagree because I often use the filters when searching for products and wind up looking at only "G-spot vibes" or whatever because I'm not crazy enough to go through every single vibe. LOL Which is why I just suggested tags or something. But it's leading off topic

Alright. For me personally, I will look at everything. Maybe that's because I am crazy enough. HAHA! I assess anything that I'm using by everything: its feel, material, how it's shaped, its weight, etc. G-Spot vibes, though, can be used for the P-Spot and vise-versa. That's why I said that most toys are multi-purpose, because really, they are. Just because they're suggested as something doesn't mean that you have to use it for that. But I understand what you mean. I think that what I was talking about was that suggested tags need to be broader and more inclusive, and that toys need to have the ability of being placed in multiple categories.

Especially when we reviewers are asked to broaden what we do with specific toys...do they feel nice on nipples, good for clitoral stimulation, g spot, and p spot, can it be used anally as well as vaginally, does it taste nice ect. We are constantly broadening the definitions of the toys anyhow so more specific lables might actually hurt potential sales and make it more difficult to find that special toy...
