Dealing with Haters

Contributor: TheParrishism TheParrishism
How do you deal with people who are being stubbornly ignorant?
Do you think people can change their views? Or is it better to just leave them be?

If they're set in their ways there's really no point in wasting energy on them. People can change their views, but on certain deep issues.

Think of an issue that you're passionate about - religion, politics, SOMETHING - and ask yourself if you could be convinced to swing the other way easily. The answer is probably 'no'. This is specific to arguments that don't have a logical yes/no side to them, but more like variations of opinion.

Edited for clarification.

You are not going to change someone elses opinion if it is something they truly believe and not just something they are spouting off that has been told to them all their life.

The best you can do is educate them and hope that they're open to learning. If they're not, there's not much you can do without quite a bit of effort, which often isn't worth it unless they're close to you.

I always wonder how you can tell the difference. I tend to just leave it unless it is something very offensive.

All you can really do is expose them to the information, keep it available and stay calm. Getting upset with them will just give them fuel to say that you're irrational or emotional.

If it reaches a point where their ignorance is hurting you too badly and impeding your progress...then the most you can do is cut them out.

Hating people and discriminating against them is not "just an opinion" like being religious or having political views. Hating other people and ostracizing them for being different is exactly where bullying progresses to harassment, harassment escalates in hate crimes, and eventually groups commit hate crimes called genocide. Hating groups of people because they are different is never okay.

I think there is a difference between hating someone and disagreeing with someone.

For example, my parents are very nice people. They do not discriminate or have any strong prejudices against anyone in the LGBT community. Yet they don't agree with gay marriage.

We have this idea that everyone has to be completely against us or completely for us. It isn't true. It's not fair to everyone if we don't allow them to have their own opinions.
