Trans* Art and Music?

Contributor: thisisadeletedaccount thisisadeletedaccount
Who are your favorite artists and musicians on the trans* spectrum? Whose work resonates with you and your life experience, or is just fun/well made in general? Do you make art or music yourself?

I only found out a couple months ago that a transgender and queer arts festival exists: link

Off the top of my head: JD Samson, Antony Hegarty, and a Canadian I don't remember the name of. I don't really seek out trans* artists, those are just a few I like.

I love JD Samson, but haven't heard Antony Hegarty, I'll look him up!

My favorites are Coyote Grace, Shawna Virago, and Rae Spoon.

Yeah, Rae Spoon is who I was thinking of.

Rae Spoon!

And I'm not sure how they individually identify, but: Girlyman.

Definitely Antony Hegarty. They are my muse.
Hopefully someday I will also be a known trans* musician.

I love them, too! I saw them play at a college near mine once. I don't know how the members all identify, though.

Oh cool! What instrument(s) do you play? Do you have a YouTube channel?

I'm not too familiar with many trans* artists, though I did rabidly paw through Against Me's discography when I learned that the lead singer Laura Jane Grace is a trans woman, and some of her more recent songs have to do with her experience.

Yeah, she and her band are great! Did you read her coming out article in Rolling Stone? It was really heartening to see that in a major magazine, and for the musical community to react so well to it all.

I did, and I was extremely pleasantly surprised at the lack of fuck-ups from the media side of things, especially after getting used to reading newspaper article after newspaper article where the newspaper's style guide is more important than accuracy or basic decency. It felt like I could actually focus my attention on the content rather than its presentation for once.

Me, too - that's a good description of the reading experience. It gave me a bit of hope that people in the media are potentially capable of handling trans*-related news pieces with some tact and respect.

JD Samson doesn't identify as trans*, but is an awesome musician!

Adhamh Roland is wonderful and has the voice of an angel! He recorded his album "Patchwork and Threadbare" during his first few months on T and you can hear his voice deepen throughout the album. It's amazing and inspiring.
Never Shout Never is fronted by a trans* guy, and the lead singer of Against Me! recently came out as trans*. However, neither of these bands really sing about queer-specific issues.
Clyde Petersen of the band Your Heart Breaks is another amazing one. I saw him open for Kimya Dawson and I totally fell in love. His album "New Ocean Waves" has several songs that refer to queer stuff. He's got this one amazing song from a different album called "Could One Letter" and it's about the founder of Plan-It-X Records (a trans*woman) who ended her own life. It's beautiful and heartbreaking. You can actually download or listen to it on their bandcamp.
