Under-representation of transfeminine folks?

Contributor: vitriolicvertigo vitriolicvertigo
I see a lot of support and great resources on here and tumblr both for transmasculine/DFAB trans* folks. But I don't see as much for transfeminine folks. Do you think transfeminine folks are underrepresented in online trans* communities?

Transfeminine-specific spaces definitely exist online, but I get the impression that there are fewer of them. I've seen a lot of discussion of this issue on Tumblr, you could probably find some interesting commentary and resources there.

The transfeminine tag on Tumblr is nearly nonexistant...and the mtf tag is usually just lumped in when there is anything to do with trans people...

Perhaps this is because there is a smaller ratio of ftm than there is mtf?

I know several F to M trans people on Eden. They're here. Some are as fully transitioned as they want to be, thus are simply men and often don't feel the need to talk about it, unless asked or in the mood, I'm guessing.

there's definitely still a LOT of misogyny in play in lots of online communities (including especially of note the feminist and transmasculine communities(places which should be safe spaces, ideally)), whether or explicit or internalized, what have you, especially towards transwomen. because of that, there seems to be a greater lack of safe spaces for women who are trans* than men who are...

anyway, yeah there's tons of stuff that could be gotten into as to WHY, but while i definitely know of some transfeminine folks on tumblr, they are definitely underrepresented, yeah.

I think it's more equal than people think but people are mostly staying in their own gender bubbles and don't feel comfortable stepping into spaces that are supposed to be equal or for one side more than the other. So they never see the other side, and then people complain about it instead of getting involved. I recently unfollowed a trans* meme I loved on Tumblr because the gender fighting was getting ridiculous. Like, people were claiming that trans* women were not submitting to this user-run blog because of the most random and ridiculous things that I really don't think affected it at all. I thought the whole fight was kind of insulting to trans* women tbh.
I know when I was first coming out it really seemed to me that there were more online communities and info for trans* women but it seems to have shifted fairly recently. Not sure why.

Are you referring to transmen who are feminine, or MtFs? There's a lot of mixed replies

There's a recently created tumblr page called link that was created specifically for DMAB trans* people to combat their frustration with, in their words, "playing second fiddle to DFAB people trans people in the queer community." More spaces like this will probably spring up with time.

It was referring to DMAB trans* folks/MTFs, underrepresentation of feminine trans* men is a whole other issue

I think tumblr is mostly transmasculine dominated, however I've heard that there's an equivalent site that's transfeminine dominated. On IRC, however, usually I'm the only FTM that attends xD definitely a more transfeminine domain from my experience.

I think you just might be looking in the wrong place. Don't know if you've heard of it, but the Reddit trans community seems to be a definite majority of MTFs. So if you're looking for a community with lots of lovely MTFs I'd definitely suggest link it's a wonderful community.

It's nice to see that there's a space for MTF folk on Reddit - I don't use the site myself, but most of the things I've heard about Reddit are on feminist websites condemning the community for its misogyny. I suppose that in a trans-specific area of the site, that's different.

Didn't even know about Reddit's trans* side.
However it all makes me think about that book, Whipping Girl: Sexism & the scapegoating of feminity, which I've not finished but is really interesting.

Theres around 4 MTF to ever FTM, so i think if you just find a site specific to them, you'll find the rock under where they're all hiding! xD

If not, i guess FTM's are a lot more "out" than mtf

I think DMAB/transfeminine folks are severely underrepresented here.

I'm guessing most of the influx here is due to the "get a packer with edenpoints" thing, and that's totally fine, but that means that we are really, really drowning out other folks in the trans* spectrum.

It's funny that you mention MtF being underrepresented here on Eden, because that does not strike me as true at all. From what I have seen on here, the overall percentage of people in the forums who are MtF versus those who are cisgender appears to be exactly the same as what I see out in the world.

Your misconception is probably due to the fact that there is an unusually high number of FtM men on here. Even if 1000 transmen join tomorrow, that won't make there be any less MtFs. The actual number wouldn't decrease unless they were prejudice against FtM which I don't think they are so I do not see what the problem is.

From my experience, sadly MtF have a few more hurdles than FtM in order to pass (for those who care about passing) so it is perfectly reasonable to think there may be somewhere they'd like to go without worrying about being treated differently or talked to differently, and for those whom that isn't happening to in day to day life they may opt for it to be online. The real life issues are more in depth than needs to be discussed in this thread so I am just leaving that bit as an example.

Another thing is that this is a SEX TOY site. Many MtF have not had surgery and don't do anal or like strokers so they won't have a lot of reason to come on here. There are exceptions of course but I can't tell you how many girls have told me they want toys but are waiting for their vaginas.

FtM on the other hand have the packers which hold almost universal appeal (most guys have tried one out at least) as well as the harnesses, Buck Angel and Couch Surfer DVDs, strokers for those with big enough cocks, pumps for those enlarging their cocks, and many of the men still like at least a little anal or vaginal play.

I thought the OP was referring to FtMs. If not, I hope my reply didn't hurt anyone's feelings.

I think you're fine. But yes, transfeminine refers to MtFs as well as other kinds of feminine trans* people, usually not FtMs.

Definitely underrepresented. Also disproportionately discriminated against. Particularly for transfeminine folks of color.

I've seen many places for transfeminine people online, (moreso than I've found for transguys tbh) but it might not be as available or as active. I wouldn't know, considering I'm male, but I do hope you find some good ones
