When someone transitions...

Contributor: Eliza Eliza
Just a few questions for those in the trans community...

An acquaintance of mine recently came out as trans (ftm), and I'm wondering how I could best support him. Obviously, accepting the transition, using his chosen name and proper pronouns, etc. are important, but are there things people don't realize are important or things you wish your friends/acquaintances did when you transitioned?

Thanks!

I had to have a conversation with some of my close friends about disclosing my trans status. They meant no harm but in certain places I worry(ied) more about my safety than others, bars in particular. And of course the occasional ego food comment about the changes was always appreciated early on

Haha, wonderful, thank you! I know I would never "out" him to anyone -- that's up to him, but it's always good to have reminders.

Disclaimer: I am cis so am speaking from observation not experience.

When a good friend of mine first came out I made a point of using his chosen name instead of his gender neutral nickname, and dropping words like chico and dude into the conversation. Never to the point of making a deal out of it, more in terms of greetings. As time went by I toned it down, though I still do greet him with "Chico".
