Today, we celebrate the wonderful creation that is the pretzel. There are so many different ways to eat them and you can get a warm, chewy soft pretzel or a hard crunchy pretzel in a ton of different shapes. I personally prefer the pretzel bites you get from that stand in the malls around here. Always with extra cheese sauce!
The pretzel has its place in history, from being a food that Catholics could eat during Lent to how it launched the hopes and dreams of newly settled American immigrants. In the 1800's the first pretzel businesses in America were launched by Swedish and German families in Pennsylvania.
In 1963, the largest pretzel of it's time weighed in at a whopping 40 lbs and measured five feet across. It was made for the film " It's a Mad Mad Mad World" and was baked by Joseph Nacchio of the "Federal Pretzel Baking Company".
