Glad you cleared that up. I am not wanting to force anyone to do anything, as I beleive you are also saying. I would just rather not have others force, or assume, anything about my celebrations (or anyone else's for that matter).

I am not against anyone celebrating anything but when they issue a greeting, particularly one with a religious significance, they should be aware of what they are saying and to whom.

Lastly, SIR? SIR??? You make me feel so old!!!! I'll get there one day, but I'm not ready yet!!!

Haha! I like sir as a general addressing, no age assumptions meant by it

I have. Among my Jewish friends, three celebrate Christmas as a secular holiday and don't mind, two are Messianic Jews and don't mind, and the rest wish me well on their holy days, so I have no idea why they would be offended that I hope my holy days go well for them too.

Among people who aren't friends, I don't usually say anything by 'Have a nice day' until I've been wished well. Also, unless someone walks in to my store wearing a yarmulke or payot, I have no way of knowing whether they're Jewish.

To add to the story Christmas has non-Christian origins even more, the tree is the most obvious sign of it, you can do quite the enriching research about this originally "pagan" celebration...

Yeah, I say "happy holidays" because not everyone celebrates Christmas, but I still say Christmas, and I'm agnostic. I don't really think it's as big of a deal as people like to make it out to be. Personally I roll my eyes at the idea of the alleged "war on Christmas".

I'm a Pagan, but all my life I have called it Christmas and I have never had a problem with that. We celebrate Yule a few days before Christmas anyway and no one is running around telling us to use the word "Holiday" so why should Christians have to say that? There is nothing about Christmas or its origins that should be offensive to anyone since its a celebration of life and family.

I have not been a Christian for a long while. I am agnostic. I appreciate the traditions of my culture, though, and always feel a need to take the Christ out of Christmas because it is a part of it. I give Christmas and holiday greetings. I tend to use "happy holidays" more, though, as I mean to include a greeting for the New Year. I like to get everything covered.

I haven't noticed many non-Christians being very mega-offended by the Christ in Christmas. I've seen a lot of hype and chain-maily types of messages about it, though. I think that many non-Christians just like to cover everything, too. I have seen more irritation with "happy holidays". But that is just my experience.

My partner has said both "Merry Christmas" and "Happy Holidays" to customers and has gotten yelled at for both. He's a really nice guy and gets nervous around customers. He was really saddened, he thought he was just being polite. He then switched to non-holiday phrases, frustrated.

If I were in a foreign country and I was given any type of polite local greeting or the like, I would take it as polite, even if I didn't agree with the history of the phrase.

I have been to "autumn parties", which are a neutral response to the pagan origin of Halloween. Although, Halloween is kind of an autumn celebration. ^_^' Oh, well.

Honestly, I'm a little fed up with political correctness sometimes, but if there is an easy way to make mostly everyone happy, OK.

It doesn't bother me mostly because I don't really see it as religous though it is... it's more just a tradition thing to me.

i say Merry Christmas to people just out of habit. this whole "Holiday" thing is so modern. i am saddened that saying Merry Christmas offends people. let's be honest, it may be rooted in Christianity and Religion, but it is not a Religious holiday to that extent anymore. it's a consumer holiday to the masses.

I have no problem with it. I think it's petty and annoying to argue about, really. xP I'm not Christian, but I celebrate the commercial gift-giving holiday of Christmas. I don't care if someone wants to wish me a happy Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Christmas, whatever! I will not be offended that they were being friendly to me

I'm offended by people who overstate the CHRIST part of the word as a passive aggressive, jerky move. Wishing someone well in any way is positive. My religion has "Holiday" from november to january, so I usually tell people Happy Holiday. There's nothing wrong with THAT, either, since it's a wish for positivity and happiness. Any wish for happiness is great, as far as I'm concerned. It's the douchebags who rail on about keeping the CHRIST in CHRISTmas!!!!!11 that get on my nerves. Cool it, be happy and positive, and let others be happy and positive!

Honestly, the folks that get offended by the word "CHrist" in Christmas shouldn't be celebrating the holiday in the first place. They are the reason taht this "holiday" has gone to crap with all the retail craziness and centered the whole thing around getting stuff. Greedy kids, whiny kids, spoiled kids. Gifts are not what its about. You don't see me celebrating Kwanza.....and I wouldnt try to CHANGE it if I did. It is what it is...get over it or stop celebrating it lol.

On that note, if I say "Happy HOlidays, its to incorporate the New year as well.....and I usually say that to those I won't be seeing before the new Year OR those that I don't know very well. its a toss up

I am not offended by the word Christmas, but I think it's ridiculous to assume that everyone you may happen to be around celebrates it. Happy holidays is not waging "war on Christmas", it is an attempt to be inclusive of people of all religious faiths.

I'm never offended by it, but it is a little "eyebrow raising moment" when someone makes a big point of it, like someone at a store who once told me "Have a BLESSED CHRISTmas in the month of our LORD", but I still don't care, it's just a little odd lol

I think that the whole, polictically correct, let's not step on anyone's feelings horseshit has gone way overboard. Say it how you want, just be respective. And if someone doesn't say it the way you would want to hear it, just be respective of them as well, it's their right to call it as they see it too. We have a lot more to worry about than just words, like maybe the deficit.

How could anyone be offended? The holiday Christmas is to celebrate the birth of Christ. Yes, I'm a Christian, but I'm not taking sides, I'm just saying, it is what it is and nobody is forced to participate in said holiday. Now on the other hand, I find it funny that some Christians become furious at the term X-Mas.
